Always call in advance before making the actual trip to ask about what is required (e.g. documents, etc.).Information as of March 2020:The practice center is closed on Thursday and Friday, but opens on the weekend. Hours also vary based on the day of the week. Weekday: 16:00 – 20:20; weekend 9:00 – 17:00. The weekend practice hours are very full and are not available until a month later in many cases. It’s easier to practice during the day, but it’s not too big of a difference at night if you speak the language and memorize the course in advance. Just walk the course before the road test on the day and you will be fine.You have to come in person to become a member in order to be able to practice on the driving course. One 3 x 2.4 photo is required along with ¥3,500 membership fee (cash only). They have a photo machine outside the facility for ¥700. You can book your appointment on the spot or call later to arrange. Each practice session (50 mins) costs ¥7,400. I took lessons to convert a foreign driver’s license into a Japanese one. You pretty much have to take two sessions as each one is meant to cover one driving course only (there are two test courses – A and B). I would recommend memorizing the course (know where to turn; use Google Earth) before coming for the lesson to maximize performance.My first instructor was extremely kind and friendly. The second instructor, however, was polar opposite – very mean, unfriendly and intimidating. Most students are foreigners who are trying to convert a foreign driver’s license, and almost all do not speak Japanese and would come with an interpreter. Because of the language / culture barrier, the staff tend to be a bit unfriendly, which is unfortunate.Although it was very expensive and wasn’t exactly a positive experience, I would highly recommend taking two lessons (for those who are trying to convert a foreign driver's license) as the instructors will tell you exactly “how to pass.” The policeman conducting the road test will know whether or not you took lessons b/c it is very specific. The road test is not a “skill test,” but rather an examination of your effort, understanding of Japanese laws, and willingness to adapt. Stay positive & good luck!
