These are not US guns. My father participated in the invasion and received a bronze battle star "Ground Combat, Iwo Jima". We have an entire photo album that he took while he was there when the battle calmed a little (his unit moved on after the war ended) that includes multiple photos of that style gun (different ones based on damage), cemeteries filled with while crosses for US 4th and 5th Marines after the main combat was over and how Japanese soldiers were buried (think dump trucks and bulldozers). Also many pictures of them catching their prize hunting down snipers (the last Japanese soldier surrendered in 1949 - 4 years after the war ended). They would stand over the body and take photos. He said it was never safe, but that didn't stop them from getting hold of a landing craft sometimes and a sheet of plywood and "surfing" off the coast. Anyway, we have an entire album including John Basilone's original headstone and many others that units made to honor their dead.
