While stationed in Okinawa in 1986-87 a few of us trekked into this jungle to look for and recover war remains of soldiers lost to the battle WW2. We found a tiny entrance to a cave that was massive once crawling about 25 feet through a very tight passage. In it had three commodes dug out of the earth at the left of the big cave. To the right there were many rotten wood supports then a passage that ended. However prior to the end there was an angled upward large passage that went about 20’ before turning left back over the top of the first cave passage. This area opened up into three room off the main tunnel. I found one of two soldiers in this region that we recovered. The skulls were missing indicating suicide due to the obvious scorching of black soot on the walls that told the story of an American soldier shooting his flame thrower into to cave entrance. Suffocation was inevitable so the Japanese soldiers took their own lives. We turned the remains over to the embassy as well as other items found hoping for identification so their families would possibly know and have them. Very humbling time for us, very sad, these poor guys all those years lost while the world moved on. I have some pictures of the jungle, cave entrance and of a cave centipede if the museum wants them.
