Buried Cultural Property "Well"This well was discovered in the summer of 1982, prior to the construction of the main building of the Kyoto City Martial Arts Center. The upper half of the well frame is made of stone, the lower half is made of wood, and a bent wooden steamer-like container with the bottom removed is set into it.The stonework is trumpet-shaped, opening wider towards the top, showing the early characteristics of a stonework well, and is thought to have been made around the 12th century (late Heian period). The actual well was picked up and restored here in a half-cut state as a good example of how wells were made at the time. The surrounding area is the site of Rokushoji Temple (a collective name for the six temples with the character "sho" in their names: Hosshoji Temple, Sonshoji Temple, Saishoji Temple, Enshoji Temple, Joushoji Temple, and Enshoji Temple), which was built in the late Heian period, and many earthenware and roof tiles from the same period have been excavated from this well.March 1985 Kyoto City
