My mum and I had an absolutely lovely experience at this tea house. Our ceremony was so peaceful and we learnt a lot about the importance of tea in Japanese culture and how it is prepared. The tea host was very informative, calm and made the whole experience a core memory for my mum and I. Very fascinating and peaceful! Don't hesitate to go here!
Oboro is one of those rare places in Kyoto where time gently loosens its grip. From the moment you step inside the teahouse, the city noise fades, replaced by silence, soft light, and a sense of presence that is increasingly hard to find while travelling in busy cities or so touristy as Kyoto. This is not a “show” or a rushed introduction to the tea ceremony. It is an invitation to slow down. To listen. To notice the weight of the bowl in your hands, the sound of water, the rhythm of breath. Every movement is intentional, every pause meaningful. Nothing feels staged — everything feels real. What made Oboro especially memorable for me was the atmosphere of calm respect and quiet guidance. Even without much prior knowledge, I felt gently held through the experience, never overwhelmed, never rushed. The hosts create a space where curiosity is welcome, and silence feels natural rather than uncomfortable.Kyoto offers many beautiful sights, but Oboro offers something deeper: a moment of stillness that stays with you long after you leave. It reminded me why we travel in the first place — not just to see new places, but to reconnect with ourselves. If you are looking for an authentic, mindful tea ceremony that honours tradition while remaining accessible and human, Oboro is truly special. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who wants to experience Kyoto beyond the surface.
Waw.
This was a great experience and a highlight of our time in Kyoto. The experience was about 45 minutes long. We booked through Klook and the tea house is located a 10 minute walk from the Imadegawa subway station. The tea house can hold up to 8 guests at a time. You get to partake in the ceremony which is followed by some education and discussion to learn about the history and ritual. We went in early October so we were served both hot roasted black tea as a welcome then hot whisked ceremony grade matcha during the ceremony.
I can't recommend this place enough! This feels like a truly authentic tea ceremony experience, not just a touristy attraction. The wonderful lady leading the tea ceremony was so kind and had the best calming energy and made this one of the best experiences of my trip so far. I got to practice my Japanese a little bit, and she was so patient with me, her english was very good too. The cold brew match was really tasty, and it was a very meditative experience - a way to disconnect from the busy world outside, and just be in the moment.
I recently had the opportunity to attend a tea ceremony at Oboro, and it was a truly enriching experience. An especially lovely way to end my visit to Kyoto. The ceremony lasted about an hour and took place across three beautifully arranged rooms, each representing a different stage of the ceremony. The progression created a calm and immersive atmosphere that invited reflection and mindfulness.Rather than focusing solely on the tea itself, the experience emphasized the tradition, symbolism, and spiritual elements of the Japanese tea ceremony. The tea masters were deeply knowledgeable and clearly passionate about their craft. They guided us through the ceremony with grace and thoughtful explanations.
I can't recommend this enough! Especially the 20hs time slot. The ceremony felt very special and unique. Taku-san's love for his craft was palpable and made the whole experience even more beautiful.

This experience is one I will remember forever. If you are looking for a tea ceremony that ties in the sacred and the modern - this is it. I learned so much about the ritual of tea ceremony and felt restored, at peace, and grateful upon leaving. Oburo has a special energy and Naiko was an exceptional hostess - sharing her wisdom, grace, and mothering mindfulness through tea. I am full of gratitude. Taku was responsive and made our booking and arrival so easy. I would recommend over and over again.
