I had never known that there was a "Non-Nuclear, Non-War Monument" here before, so this was my first visit.Apparently, the remains of many innocent victims who died in the atomic bombing on August 9, 1945 are buried here.I can't do anything as amazing as the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Victims Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo), so I've been praying for peace here.
A heavy but peaceful atmosphere at this monument which seems like it doesn’t get a whole lot of visitors. This is a site where the remains of between 10 and 20,000 unidentified victims of the atomic bombing are kept (in the small building next to the monument, which was closed when I visited). The signboard explains that the bone collection process was started by local residents with support from people all over Nagasaki in March of 1946, when the area was still a wasteland strewn with bodies in various states of decay. There has been considerable unresolved debate about where the final resting place for these remains should be, but the site is operated by the local Buddhist temple affiliated with Higashi Honganji (Otani-ha). A good place to pay your respects and reflect.
