All over Japan right now, grandchildren are discovering forgotten coins from their grandparents' collections — those shiny 500-yen commemorative coins — and wondering what to do with them. There are three main options, but I only recommend one.The first option is to take them to a specialist buy-back shop that deals in branded items. They greet you politely and even offer you tea and biscuits, but they also tell you that the coins can’t be used in vending machines, which is a subtle way of nudging you to sell them. But don’t be fooled — they’ll only pay you less than the coins are worth. This is not the way to go.The second option is to try a major bank. At one bank, for example, I was told, 'We can exchange them, but there’s a 960-yen handling fee.' This means that the whole effort of bringing in 2,000 yen suddenly seems pointless. At least the buy-back shop wouldn’t take quite so much off.The third and best option is to call ahead, make a reservation and exchange the coins directly at the central bank branch. There are no fees or hidden catches. The staff are exceptionally polite, meticulous and professional. Walking into that solid, secure building is an experience in itself. A gentle reminder: don’t forget to book your appointment in advance. It's the kind of simple, quiet efficiency that makes you think, 'Ah, this is how things should be done.'
