Wonderful lanterns with a deep connection to this sacred place. Beware not to touch them and damage them. They blend spectacularly with the forest and are definitely worth the hike up to here.
The Kasuga Taisha Oma-gata Toro (春日大社御間型灯籠) is a distinctive type of bronze lantern found at Kasuga Taisha, a famous Shinto shrine in Nara, Japan. Kasuga Taisha, established in 768, is dedicated to the Fujiwara clan’s ancestral deities and is well known for its beautiful stone and bronze lanterns, many of which have been donated by worshippers over the centuries. The Oma-gata Toro is one of the representative styles of these lanterns, contributing to the shrine’s mystical and sacred atmosphere. The lantern has a hexagonal frame with intricate metalwork, featuring auspicious motifs such as deer, which are considered sacred messengers of the gods in Kasuga Taisha. The lanterns are often inscribed with prayers or the names of donors, reflecting the deep connection between worshippers and the shrine. These lanterns are particularly breathtaking during the Setsubun Mantoro and Obon Mantoro festivals, when thousands of them are lit, creating an ethereal glow throughout the shrine grounds.Bronze lanterns like the Oma-gata Toro demonstrate the refined craftsmanship of the Heian and Kamakura periods, blending religious devotion with artistic excellence. As an integral part of Kasuga Taisha’s identity, they symbolize the shrine’s long-standing history and spiritual significance. Visitors to the shrine can admire these lanterns while walking along the moss-covered paths, experiencing a serene and timeless connection to Japan’s cultural and religious heritage.
