Summer House (36 C)And still comfortable when following the rhythm of the Japanese summer.We followed the advice from Tone and Kimi for the Kumano Kudo walk which means we were able to cover 10km before 10am (we left the lodge at 7am).We returned to the lodge with an amazing breakfast waiting in the room and relaxed in the lodge at the height of the heat.We went to Kawayu Onsen in the late afternoon for a swim in the clear water and hot bathing pools hopping by the side of the stream.Tone and Kimi prepared a BBQ for our dinner.The most amazing hosts I have ever came across. Kimi and Tone took such genuine care of us and the space they created.
We had the most incredible stay at Kimi and Tone’s beautiful wooden guest house. The space itself is stunning—crafted with care, full of charm, and boasting a truly breathtaking view. It had everything we needed for a comfortable, peaceful night after long days of hiking.But what made our stay truly special were our hosts. Kimi and Tone welcomed us with open arms and open hearts, showing us such generosity and thoughtfulness from the moment we arrived. After a rainy day on the trail, they helped us dry our soaked shoes and gear—something we were incredibly grateful for. That same evening, they and their two lovely children brought us to a local onsen, creating a memory we’ll always cherish.As if that weren’t enough, they also prepared an incredible barbecue dinner, and throughout our stay they were kind, positive, attentive, and easy to connect with. Staying here isn’t just about a beautiful house or great amenities (though you’ll get both)—it’s about the rare and meaningful chance to share time with a warm and welcoming Japanese family. We couldn’t recommend it more highly. Thank you, Kimi and Tone!
Tone and Kimi were the most wonderful hosts and the Yakiohouse is a beautiful mountain oasis! The location is perfect when visiting Kumano Kodo, we stayed there for two nights while hiking the trail and wished we had stayed longer. The house has beautiful natural colors, organic shapes and small, thoughtful design elements throughout. The view from the large windows is breathtaking, into lush green mountains, the river, and an old bridge. Tone and Kimi take such great care of their guests, they provided helpful tips for our hike, had maps handy, they bring in fresh natural water, insisted to help carry our luggage, had umbrellas for us when it rained. They’re such a sweet family, we would stay here again in a heartbeat!
New, clean and nicely designed accommodation with a stellar view. We enjoyed the delicious hot pot supper and plentiful breakfast. Also very much appreciated complimentary shuttle to the Kumano Kodo route and especially the access to a washing machine to clean our sweaty trail clothes. The hosts are very open, kind and generous people.
We stayed here after finishing the Kumano Kodo walk and it was the perfect experience. The hosts were extremely warm and friendly and provided an amazing, clean warm and comfy stay for us in their recently renovated apartment. We were also given freshly made, super authentic tasty food. Out of our 3 weeks in Japan this was easily our favourite place we stayed at and highly recommend staying here!
Yakiohouse was an absolutely amazing stay. The family, Kimi, Tone, and their two kids, are so lovely to spend an evening with. We went to the local onsen (they helped me get my tattoos in no problem), we checked out the natural onsen at kawayu, and they fed me some amazing nabe.I was doing the kumano kodo and I had some serious chafing issues, so they brought me to the store and helped me find a tin of baby powder. Really above and beyond friendly and eager to hang out.The sleeping area was clean and beautiful and smelled amazing — Hinoki wood.I would highly recommend yakio house if you’re in the hongu Taisha area and are looking for a place to stay.

Arigato gozaimasu Tone and Kimi! We had a very wonderful stay at Yakiohouse. So grateful that Tone and Kimi can cater to our vegetarian diet. The BBQ and hotpot suppers were very yummy. Thanks for the shuttle to/from Hongu bus stop.The view was spectacular!
