Stayed a few years ago but was planning to head back. Wonderful place to stay and amazing renovation work on a traditional Machiya. The bathroom area is stunning and a standout feature. The design aspect in retaining the Japanese feel, the quality of the interiors and attention to little details definitely comes through. If you are looking for a house stay / luxury air bnb type of experience (with better service) while having an authentic stay with modern luxuries, would recommend.Used to live in Japan so I think some of the negative reviews about noise and space is a little unwarranted. All the traditional Japanese machiya houses have similar issues so it’s part of an authentic experience :) I think as with people, you need to either lean-in and embrace the both the flaws and the pluses being the authenticity, or choose a more conventional hotel
The best hospitality experience I've ever had. So beautiful and calm. You get a feeling that you're staying in a traditional Maachia but with the touch of high-end hotel because of the well thought through design solutions. Just amazing. Maana Kamo is super centrally located and by a big road, however, we were not bothered by this at all. Just really enjoyed the easy access to the different parts of the city.
Way overpriced for what you get. Falsely advertised as much larger with hot tub, garden view etc. It's got a one person bathtub in a room without heat. And a 2ft x 8 ft. pile of rocks with tree for the garden. Very drafty in the winter. Extremely loud as it sits facing a main road. The best thing was the breakfast delivery. No place to unpack clothing. Terrible location for activities. Plenty of comparable choices for half the price. Do not recommend. The photos are deceiving with a wide angle lens. Both bedrooms are inches from each other.
Beautiful place - but the hot water for the bath isn't hot enough and takes a long time to fill.
Immersive, authentic Edo-era Japanese stay experience combined with outstanding modern technologies for comfort and cleanliness. I experienced the best of both worlds.Aesthetics, interior designs are from renovations of an old building, they call it "machiya". Because I am a very tall person, I had to duck down at some doors to avoid hitting my head.
Home away fromHome.
First time staying in a "Machiya". I would describe it as a mix between a ryokan and a modern B&B. The old and the new. The ample space and the great interior drew me to stay here. It's next to the kamogawa river.Check-in was a breeze and the great isolation kept it very quiet inside.

This property is beautiful and thoughtfully equipped, but for me it was not viable as accommodation. My main issue is that the Booking.com description does not clearly state the most important limitations: this is an old traditional building, it locates on a main road and has very poor sound insulation, and it is uncomfortable for actual rest and sleep. If I had known this in advance, I would not have booked it.Value for money:As for a client, the price is too high for a house where it is so difficult to rest. This may work for someone who is specifically looking for a historic machiya experience and is very interested in Japanese traditional architecture. But for a regular guest expecting comfortable accommodation at this price point, it can be very disappointing. What was good:* Very clean* Excellent communication — offered luggage storage on the day before and even after checkin (I didn’t use next day, but still it was nice)* Convenient by taxi: around 3 minutes from the center* Good quality finishing materials — wood, tiles* Very pleasant tableware* Good appliances, bathroom fixtures, hairdryer, amenities, coffee/drips, scrubs* Well-designed lighting with dimmers and labels* The owners clearly put a lot of care into the details — handwritten welcome note, cosmetic pads in the bathroomMain problems:* Very poor sound insulation. Even in the inner bedroom, traffic from the busy road is clearly audible, especially motorbikes/sirens/service works* The futon room facing the street does not feel suitable for sleeping* Low beams and stairs make moving through the house uncomfortable — need to bend every time moving through every cubicle. In addition to medium soft mattress, I got the back pain after one day* No proper wardrobe - luggage has to stay open on the floor* The downstairs area has floor/bar seating only, so there is no comfortable place to relax, have tea, or rest after walking* Bedroom AC blows directly toward the bed* The bathtub looks beautiful in photos, but it is square and uncomfortable for lying down or relaxing* Despite the good materials, the feeling of the house still like a rustic shed/barn when using the stairs and tatami rooms* The photos present the space much more attractively than it feels in real useThe house is atmospheric, clean, and traditional, but not suitable for comfortable rest. At this price point, the lack of sound insulation, storage, comfortable seating, and restful sleeping conditions should be stated much more clearly in the listing. I would prefer not to sleep here even if I were paid to do so.P.S. For good photos make sure you are in during the day time and good sunny weather, otherwise might feel creepy and not cosy.
