This is an amazing, intimate and unique experience that is a must-do if you ever visit Kyoto.I went there a year ago and absolutely loved the music and the people working at Gen. They have such love and respect for this art form, and they make sure to share it in a unique way.My sister and my parents visited later for a special celebration for my father's birthday and I recommended this experience to them. I mentioned the special occasion to the team at Gen, and they went above and beyond to make this experience unique for them.My family was overwhelmed with joy by the concert and the way they celebrated the occasion.Thank you so much to all the team at Gen. We sincerely appreciate you and we can not recommend this experience enough.
This was one of the most beautiful experiences of our trip to Japan. My partner and I attended Kyoko-san's koto and shamisen performance, and we were deeply moved by it. Her talent is extraordinary, and the music filled us with a sense of harmony, wonder, and joy that we had not experienced in a long time.We would also like to thank the wonderful lady who introduced the instruments and each piece with enthusiasm and personal insights. Her explanations added a special touch to the evening. It was a beautiful and memorable evening that made us feel connected to a very special part of Japanese culture. We left feeling grateful, inspired, and very fortunate to have been there.Highly recommended.
Music is truly an universal language. We had a pleasure of being an audience for Kyoko-san, a passionate and experienced musician. Her performance will stay with us for a long time. If you are even slightly interested in japanesse music or/and instruments, do not miss that opportunity!
Kyoto: Traditional Concert at Townhouse with LessonI booked this experience for the three members of my travel party during my recent trip to Japan. Both the Townhouse and Bathhouse venues seemed like fantastic experiences, but we decided to go with the more intimate Townhouse setting as it offered the Koto workshop add on.The venue was intimate as promised, with only five of us in attendance. The entire Gen team did a fantastic job giving us the history of the Koto and Shamisen, and explaining the mechanics and musical techniques used when playing the instruments. Any music lover or performer in your group will really appreciate the mini ethnomusicology lesson. The concert itself consisted of five pieces with two pieces being traditional and three being more modern works. The two traditional pieces might be a bit jarring to any listener who is not familiar with Japanese traditional music as the playing and vocal styles are very different from what Western listeners are accustomed to, but don’t let this deter you. Be open minded about the music, and I do not doubt you will hear the beauty despite the dissimilarity of the style to what you may be accustomed to. Even if the traditional pieces do not resonate with you, the modern pieces will be very accessible to any listener. It was a beautiful concert, and my entire party really enjoyed it.We also participated in the Koto workshop after the concert, and we had a blast. None of us will be becoming masters of the Koto any time soon, but it was awesome to have a hands-on experience. It really gave us an appreciation for how skilled the performer was. I highly recommend this concert and workshop experience to anyone who has an interest in both experiencing and learning about traditional Japanese music. There is also a question and answer session after the concert, so I would recommend coming with questions in mind. Do remember that not all western musical terms translate well into Japanese, so keep that in mind when you are brainstorming questions.
We were absolutely spellbound by the Koto and Shamisen concert! It was fascinating, starting with a superb theoretical intro that provided great context. Kyoko- san herself was outstanding her incredible talent and versatility are breathtaking. We were truly blown away by her skills and artistry. A magnificent performance!
Amazing experience! Our group of six (4 from the U.S., 2 from Taiwan) was truly impressed. Even our guitarist was blown away by Kyogo’s skill and professionalism. A memorable and unique cultural highlight in Kyoto — highly recommend!
An indescribable experience, truly sensational. What lingers in the end is the desire to keep listening, to keep feeling, to never let the moment fade. One of the best memories I’ll take with me.
It was one of the best experiences we've had here in Japan. We booked through a website we didn't know and came all the way from Osaka just for the concert. It was wonderful, I have no words to describe it. It was a small group of only 8 people, super intimate, everyone was very kind and welcoming!
The concert and class was so fun! I would recommend this activity to everyone. The guide and performer were both very kind and friendly. I liked the selection of music, the intimate small group setting, and the flow of the program. The class was the cherry on top and made it 1000% more fun.

Une magnifique performance qui promeut un art traditionnel trop peu connu dans le reste du monde . Un véritable moment de grâce très intime. Une ovation particulière à l’ interpretation de « flying like a bird » de Tadao Sawai . En un mot splendide
