Are you creative? Do you wish you were? Try your hand at pottery with Hatori-san!Hatori-san teaches the Hatoritogei class. Comprised of a brief historical overview of traditional pottery; the use of the equipment; a hands-on lesson crafting your own creation; and firing it up for a finished product - I found it really interesting and engaging.Though I had no prior experience in pottery, I could appreciate the craftsmanship. From kneading the clay to etching, from sculpting to finding the right size (the clary shrinks when it dries), Hatori-san sits nearby as a resource and willing to give you guidance as you create your masterpiece. And it's well worth it. After this class, I found a new appreciation for the time, talent, passion, and vision that goes into each piece. A bit transforming, at least in the appreciation of it? Definitely.You can make two pieces in the Hatoritogei class. If, like myself, you only have a short while (a week or less), you'll have to come back a few months later for the "glaze" (not sure what it's called). It's part of the drying and finishing process, isn't patience a virtue?It's also worth taking time to just walk around the shop, inquiring about the process to make each piece. It's fascinating, and to hear the stories behind each piece. Looking forward to hearing yours!
