Between the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, the two nights we spent here was one of the best decisions we made for our Japan trip because it helped us slow down and take all of it in. Christian takes care of everything from picking you up at the station, cooking you breakfast and setting up activities and also even driving you there. The Ryokan itself was beautiful and wish we had more time to just unwind. We did not have a lot of time to do the many activities that were possible, but Christian helped us get a reservation at a very nice Tempura restaurant and it was one of our highlights of Japan. He was also super nice to drive us to an Onsen the next day and helped us check in there. I would totally recommend staying here for a few days outside of Kyoto if you are looking for some peace, quiet time and a different Japan experience
We went a couple of years ago for our honeymoon. We did a whirlwind tour of the entire country, starting all the way up at Hokkaido and going all the down to Hiroshima. We stayed at this Bishamon guest house near Kyoto, and it was easily one of the best and most memorable parts of the trip that I still talk about to this day.Christian is a very outgoing and friendly host. He took us to a local glass blowing spot which was really cool, we still have the windchimes we made. And a few spots to eat. I learned I don't have the palette for Kaiseki. The home itself was very cozy, but spacious. But easily the best part was just getting to wander around the town by ourselves and explore the trails and stumble onto these amazing stone works just all over the place, and then Christian also dropped us off at a nearby temple that was HUGE, and almost nobody there. It was like the big temples in Kyoto, but they are so crowded with tourists. This was like we had the whole place to ourselves. What a beautiful town.I even got a kick out of meeting the "spirit of bishamon" in our bedroom, which was a nasty fighting critter sent to meet us... which Christian helped us kill with some bug spray. And of course not having to cook breakfast was very nice.I'm very tall, and a smacked the heck out of my head on one of the rafters. Japan was not built for me. But this experience was worth every penny. Highly recommended.
A wonderful home away from home. Christian and his family welcomed us with opened arms. Their home is spacious and the kitchen had everything needed to prepare homecooked meals. Two couples can comfortably stay and maintain privacy in separate suites, and then also enjoy the common areas. Downtown Kyoto is only a 20 minute train ride away.
What an awesome fantastic stay at Bishamon house, featuring a traditional spacious Japanese house with the best trilingual host you could ever find in Japan. Christian made us a beautiful Japanese breakfast each morning before giving us a ride into the local station not far away. We could then take the quick 18 minute trip into Kyoto for the day before returning and being picked up again by our 5 star legendary host. Dont forget to stop at the gorge train station Hozukyo on the way in to Kyoto for a quick look down the gorge and The Train museum in Kyoto is something else worthwhile too !Can't wait to return !
Prachtig groot huis in het rustige stadje Kameoka. Heel mooi Japans ingericht.
Our visit to Bishamon House was definitely one of the higlights of our first time in Japan. We stayed for two nights but could've stayed longer. The countryside was a moment of calmness compared to the big cities (Tokio, Kioto). We loved the atmosphere of Kameoka: the quiet streets, the woods nearby and the guest house itself was like in a movie. The host family was wonderful and gave good tips and drove us around different places. For example we took the old Torokko train from Kameoka to Arashiyama Bamboo forest. Perhaps the most memorable dinner we had during two weeks was in Kameoka: the host took us to a traditional Japanese multicourse menu in a local small restaurant. The food there was interesting, delicious and cheap - try it with and open mind (plus the owner of the restaurant was super friendly along with the local customers). Go to Bishamon House - it now has a special place in our hearts!
We spent fantastically beautiful days at Bishamon House. A beautiful old house with all the necessary modern equipment. |We slept in the Japanese room with tatami mats and on futons, thanks for that finally my back pain was gone afterwards.|We had of course booked breakfast and two dinners, one time there was wonderful Nabe and the next evening Okonomiyake to eat instead. Everything tasted great.|Just behind the house is a small Shinto shrine with Tori, there I was every morning and listened to the birds.|Thanks to Christian we had two very nice excursions. Once to the village of Miyama with thatched houses. Then Christian drove us to Yoshimine-dera, incredibly beautiful and quiet temple complex, especially soothing after tourist crowds in Kyoto. |In addition, we could in the nearby glass studio Calore two beautiful drinking glasses of course with much help from the master, otherwise I would not have dared of course. |On top of that, we made our own chopsticks at the Nagaoka Meichiku Bamboo Workshop.|Although our stay was quite full of experiences, we were able to relax wonderfully thanks to Christian's care and the tranquility of the house.|Ofuro was a relief after the excursions.|Thank you very much for everything!!!!|
My wife and I stayed at the Bishamon House in early January for two days and two nights and we had a phenomenal experience. Christian and his wife Tsuzumi were amazing hosts! Christian did a great job in recommending a local sushi restaurant for dinner on our first night. The food was amazing, and the atmosphere was just as welcoming and friendly as the Bishamon House. The accommodations at the house were authentic, cozy, and just what we were looking for.Christian made us breakfast each morning (which we now scramble our eggs the Christian way since we loved them so much), and he gave us a great recommendation on walking in the area to visit the seven shrines and temples. It was a great way to take in the beautiful countryside, and there was an excellent soba restaurant near one of the shrines. Later that evening, we decided to do the Soba noodle class and we cannot recommend that enough! Sensei was a very good teacher and was very patient with us in making soba noodles. Christian was also there throughout the experience to translate for us. Once we made the noodles, sensei cooked all of our dishes and it was excellent. We now try to make "Japanese Pickles" at home from that experience.Bishamon house was an amazing experience and I hope more people get to experience this hidden gem.
Bishamon House is a wonderful, relaxing way to Bishamon House is a wonderful, relaxing way to experience authentic Japan away from the crowds of tourists in the city. It’s a quick train ride from Kyoto, about 20 min. Their property is beautiful, overlooking the city of Kameoka. Their are beautiful, peaceful shrines all walking distance from their house, one is basically in their backyard! The neighbors, restauraunt owners, and bartenders throughout the town are welcoming and thrilled to have you. Tsuzimi and Christian help make reservations and plan your stay in Kameoka, making it fun filled and stress free. We really enjoyed having locals to talk about Japanese culture in a comfortable, unique setting. Tsuzimi is a great cook and we had a blast eating with their family. ||||One of the highlights of our trip! Couldn’t recommend this more!

We stayed here during our two-week trip to Japan, and it was an excellent experience. Christian is an outstanding host, friendly, responsive, and genuinely helpful. Having lived in Japan since 2018, he has a deep understanding of the culture and was incredibly helpful in answering our questions and offering local insights. The location was convenient, about 15–30 minutes from Kyoto Station depending on the train, making it easy to get around. Staying in a quieter suburban area was also a refreshing change of pace from the busier city centers.Overall, this was a fantastic stay, and we would highly recommend it.
