This is the kanji for "eternity", pronounced "ei-en" in Japanese.I participated in a calligraphy workshop led by Fudemura-sensei. She was incredibly patient with me! She must have been thinking the kanji I chose was appropriate 😆It was a real pleasure to work from the beginning, rubbing the "sumi" (ink stick) to produce the ink, then trying hard to clear my mind and relax, then being led through the process of holding the brush, going through each stroke of the brush, and finally producing something I was satisfied with (on the most beautiful parchment!).Something I really took away from the experience was how important form is to the Japanese arts. It's not just what you do but HOW you do it. And the HOW is actually very important to producing something worthwhile. It reminded me of taiko drumming. It's not just getting the piece of music right but also getting the form correct for all the drummers, thus creating a unified whole.The "fude" brush must be held vertical and this means your whole arm, even whole body, must move as you put ink to paper. It's all part of immersing your entire being into the process. Highly recommended!Calligraphy in Japanese is 書道, "shoudou". Here are some other Japanese arts.柔道, "juudou" JUDO茶道, "sadou" tea ceremony弓道, "kyuudou" Japanese archeryAs you can see, the second kanji for each is the same. This kanji is "michi" when standing alone and means "road" or "path". So each craft is a journey 🙂
