At 92 years old ObaChan is still greeting and welcoming customers in Hakone. Very centrally located. If I had known about this place would have booked!! Just a delight and worth visiting for an authentic experience. Walk up the hill to 7/11 or down to Hakone Open Air Art Museum. Chisu Falls also nearby.
We really enjoyed our time at this quite little ryokan. Hosted by a lovely lady and her elderly mother, who each speak a little english, they welcomed us and showed us to our rather large room, which was more like an apartment. The room was clean and warm, with a little kitchen and a toilet. The large japanese style bathroom was on the bottom/basement floor and was used in turn by each room (so sometimes you have to wait your turn). There was also a nice (private) outdoor tub just outside the bathroom.||||Note that there was no food, bar some fruit that was placed in our room each day, and no internet or wifi. There is a convenience store a little further up the hill and around the corner.||||Importantly, Google maps pointed us to the wrong address. But in fact, it's actually quite easy to find. The ryokan is on the main street as you walk up the hill from Chokoku-no-mori station. You cross a creek/canal/drain and then it's shortly on the left. There's an english sign with the name of the ryokan, but look for the name of the onsen in the building, "Kowakidani Onsen". It's certainly easier to get here from Chokoku-no-mori station than from Kowakidani station. I've attached a screen grab of a map showing the actual location.
We stayed two nights in this friendly little ryokan and had a very nice and big Japanese style tatami room. It was actually more like a small apartment with a tiny adjoining kitchen. Very clean and perfect for our needs. We were served green tea and sweets in our room upon arrival and slipped into the comfortable yukatas (bathrobes) provided. ||||Two sweet older ladies greeted us, and they were very friendly even though we weren't able to communicate very well with them due to the language barrier. They did manage to guide us to the private onsen downstairs though, which was absolutely wonderful - both outdoor and indoor pool available. A definite must-do!||A nice and simple breakfast was served in the morning - Japanese dishes, tea and fresh fruit - in the homely "living room" next to the reception. We felt very welcome.||||Our room overlooked rooftops and lush green mountain sides in the background. The town is very small and very quiet but very well located for exploring the rest of the Hakone area. ||Hakone Open Air museum is just a few minutes down the road - highly recommended. ||It is also just a short 5 minute walk downhill to the cable car station for trips down the mountain to Hakone City or further up the mountain to visit the volcanic fields, sail in pirate ships on blue Lake Oshino and perhaps catch a glimpse of elusive Mount Fuji in the distance. ||||To make a reservation, contact the friendly owners by email at choraku.nakaji@hotmail.co.jp. They are quick to respond and did their best to answer all our many questions prior to our arrival.
My boyfriend and I stayed one night in this ryokan: we've read about it in Lonely planet Guide and since we wanted to visit Hakone and its hot spring we opt for this very cheap and beautiful ryokan. It's 4 minutes walking from Choraku-no-Mori rail station, when you exit from the station go uphill to your left,and it's after the Open musem, on your left. The Ryokan is very cozy and clean, charming in its semplicity and has AMAZING big room with kitchinette and futon and tatami. You enter in Japanese dimension and there you can find everythink you can expect from a traditional Ryokan: kindness, quiet and courtesy. The staff speak a little bit of english and you can contact them by email or fax.||It's the best Ryokan I've been considering price quality relationship!||It has also onsen (hot spring) inside for private use!||I advise it to everybody!

If you are looking for a centrally-located place to stay in Hakone, then this accommodation is perfect. The owner and hostess is lovely, knowledgeable and always ready to help as well as provide a relaxing experience. The onsite onsen can be reserved for private use for a small fee and is also tattoo friendly. Just let the hostess know in advance.Included in the price is a small apartment with a kitchen, a living / eating area and a tatami room with futons. You will truly get an authentic experience with amazing views of the surrounding mountains. Would highly recommend for the fair price.
