We just googled our way in on our way from Shirakawa-go to the Notojima Aquarium, because I saw the word Izakaya. And it turned into one of the best dining experiences out of three long trips to Japan.In spite of the complete and total language barrier, Noriko-san went out of her way to make us feel welcome and patiently try to communicate with us. There were five large platters at the counter, waiting to be reheated, plus all kinds of things served up fresh. From the platters, we got the soy-ginger salmon with roast potatoes, the potato-onion croquettes, and the okra, plus some delicious wagyu steak magically appeared, accompanied by cabbage and tomatoes, as did a delicious miso soup with potatoes and some simple glass noodles with vinegar and ginger. The locals who came in after us were fighting over who could pour Jack Daniels down us and were sending croquettes our way. The entire feast for the two of us including beer came to all of ¥ 2,500. This place is well worth pulling off the highway for! Tell them that you read the Google review and that Phil from Los Angeles sent to you, and I am certain they will take good care of you! I can't wait to return!
