I joined not touristy activity, it was the first experience for me. And it was interesting! After meeting her, I felt warm as if she is my old frend or sister. This isn’t a typical tour, you will feel like you'll be a part of Shioya.Traveling with little kids is so hard, but Sumile made it easy.We can feel the town is retro and nostalgic.Especially I recommend eating 塩海苔 there while looking out at the sea, really delicious!
Thank you, sweet auntie of Shioya! My grandparents used to live in Shioya,so I joined the tour to visit this place full of memories. Sumire-san and everyone in Shioya were so warm and friendly — your smiles and stories brought back so many memories and really touched my heart. Everyone was so kind!It was also fun spending time with the young man from China.I had such a lovely time — a mix of nostalgia and new discoveries.I’d love to visit again in a different season.Thank you so much for everything!
After reading the existing reviews, we booked this trip from the UK a month or so before we arrived in Japan. The reviews were not wrong !! What a lovely time we had !!We came in on a cruise ship, and Sumile met us at the cruise terminal and took us by metro and JR trains to Shioya village in an unrushed way, giving us lots of information on the journey- In perfect English. At Shioya train station she handed us over to her colleague ’Scottie’ (as she had to get back to Kōbe that day), and we started the tour proper. At our own pace, we visited a Sea Weed processing factory (not something you see every day), then down to the small harbour, all the time being given lots of information about the village and what happens where. From the harbour we went into the village proper, through the ‘compact’ winding streets until eventually we ended up in a small local coffee which was lovely and warm after what was a cold day outside. We spent a good hour in here drinking coffee and talking all things Japan with Scottie (an Australian who has lived in Japan for 15 years, and knows what’s what); In the meantime the owner of the cafe gave us some treats including Japanese tea, and some Japanese Caligraphy written by her in front of us as a gift from Japan 😊When we left the Cafe we went to a fish shop where Sushi was purchased for us which we ate at a table in the meandering passageways around the shops; Spent the remainder of our time just walking through the village and picking up lots of information about Japan before it was time to return back to Kobe on the train by ourselves (a very easy journey)If you want to go somewhere to spend lots of money in tourist shops, and see lots of crowds, then Don’t do this trip !!But, if you want to see genuine Japanese village life in an unrushed way, then this is the trip for you. Thanks to Sumile and Scottie for a great time 😊😊
I had a great experience with Sumire on the Shioya tour.We had a lot of fun speaking to people, exploring and eating food. The sense of community was amazing and the people were so genuinely friendly, nice and fun to chat to.It's also got a lot of character and there were so many unique things to see that Sumire pointed out and explained.I loved learning about the culture and really appreciated joining conversations with the people there through Sumire who introduced me to everyone! It was really unforgettable and I highly recommend it if you want to see a side of Japan that's often missed by tourists
For as long as we have done our river and ocean cruises , we have booked private tours. The two tours we did with Sumire Takemoto rank in the top five of all time greats. Her planning is excellent. Her ability to connect with her clients and figure out exactly the right thing to do is outstanding. The pacing of her tours is just right. She is knowledgeable, makes excellent use of local transportation options (which saves a lot), has an awesome sense of humor, and shares interesting anecdotes about local life. Truly one of the best.We did a half-day tour on a rainy day with her to the top of Mount Rokko with a walk-through of a lovely herb garden and a stop in the shopping district at a popular café. The following day we visited her hometown coastal village of Shioyacho, where we learned about production of Nori and met a number of engaging local business people who warmly welcomed us. Then it was back to Kobe for lunch at an Izakaya. (look it up - they are really terrific.) That afternoon we headed to the sake district of Kobe for tastings at two breweries and a visit to a very well done sake museum at one of them that covered traditional and current production methods.Book with her early. She is very in demand.
We had the best time exploring the history of Kobe and gaining a new appreciation for the steak. Sumile took her time getting to know each of the guests in our group and chatting with her about Kobe and her family made for a fantastic afternoon. Traveling with a toddler can be hard, but Sumile made it easy and went out of her way to make sure our daughter felt special and included along the way.If you are looking for a Kobe steak experience, Sumile is the perfect guide to bring you around the city. She gave me a new appreciation for he diversity of culture here and guided us through our one of a kind meal, even making sure the chefs knew my mom’s food allergies and made accommodations for our group to make it the best experience we have done.

Joining Sumire Takemoto’s local tour in Shioya, Kobe was such a heart-warming and unforgettable experience. Sumire guided us not to tourist spots, but to the places where real life happens — the seaside where local children learn seaweed farming, friendly shops, and a cozy old café where neighbors chat. She shared old photos and her own memories, making every corner of Shioya come alive with warmth and stories. It felt like walking with a dear local friend. If you wish to feel the true heart of Japan and connect with its people, this tour will touch your heart.
