On our last night in Japan, we decided to look for a craft gin bar knowing that Japan is a producer of gin. Given the quality of Japanese products we wanted to try what they had to offer at least once. In searching online, we came across “Chelsea” in the Shibuya district of Tokyo. Unfortunately, our directions led us around the corner however, another bar owner kindly walked us to the correct location. If this happens to you as well, keep in mind that the bar is nearby. Don’t give up! It is worth it!Upon walking in, we were met with a moody atmosphere. Sam, the owner rose from his stool and tended to our requests. We were truly in for a treat and a surprise. He was a pleasure to talk to, extremely personable, generous, and very knowledgeable about gin.He had a wall from floor to ceiling lined with specialty gins from a number of countries. The fascinating and exciting part was that these gins were specialty gins. Some were rare and unheard of but Sam was generous enough to share his collection with us.He asked us what taste we preferred, and he proceeded to turn around and admire his collection, deciding which gin would suit our preferences best. Each gin and tonic was beautiful and unique. It was a joy to participate with him in my love for gin and G & Ts. He - an artist - brought forth the art in this cocktail, expanding our mind and awareness of the kind of gins that exist.We were served smoked nuts as a snack, which paired nicely and he played soul music in the background. Sam has a love for soul music and is a musician himself. If you were ever interested, he shared with us that from time to time he holds intimate musical performances in this small space.We hope to return and not only experience these gin and tonics anew but also meet with Sam again. Hopefully we will be around to hear his musicianship as well.This was hands down one of the best experiences of our trip. Thank you, Sam (Hiro) for helping celebrate part of my healing journey with the beautiful cocktails you prepared for us. I hope more people discover this gem.P.S. Chelsea is a smoking atmosphere, but it wasn’t a bother for me.
Sam was the friendliest and most knowledgeable person about gin I have ever meet. He has a great supply of gins from all over the world. He has amazing gins at good prices and great music. We totally loved the experience and can’t wait to go back. He even called us a taxi and we found out he had paid for the taxi when we arrived at our destination. Best host ever !!!
Best gin bar ever. I’ve visited bunch of bars in Tokyo but here’s my favorite one definitely.
A highlight of the trip. Dimly lit with rustic fitout. A knowledgeable and inventive host whips up a delicious gin concoction tailored to you. Top marks for the soul music adding to the moody vibes.
Unassuming little bar hidden in Shibuya.The atmosphere is great, American blues, eucalyptus smell, low light and hundreds of bottles of gin.The bartender spoke English and chose gins for us after a few questions. We loved the gins he selected for us! (Especially the Stin one)On the pricier side.
日本で一番の品揃えのジン専門のバー。各国のジンを楽しめるし、わからない人にはオススメを説明してくれる代々木上原から移転したばかり。マスターも英語が話せて安心感があり、夜遅くまでやっているので2軒目として使いやすい。個室もあるので6名くらいにはちょうど良い。
