This was one of the most memorable experiences of my trip to Kyoto. The studio is located in Fushimi Momoyama, a beautiful area near Fushimi Inari and many traditional sake breweries, so it was easy to combine with sightseeing. We started by drinking matcha, which helped me slow down and relax before the calligraphy. The teacher was very kind and created a calm, private atmosphere. This felt completely different from a regular calligraphy class — it was more like creating my own Japanese art piece to take home.
ただ字を書く場だと思っていたら、禅や侘び寂び、間の話まで聞けて驚きました。講師の方がこちらの言葉を拾いながら漢字を一緒に考えてくれます。和紙に筆を置く瞬間、余白まで作品になる感じがありました。
京都駅周辺の混雑から少し離れたくて、伏見桃山の方へ向かいました。酒蔵のある街を歩いてから入るスタジオは静かで、受付後も急かされず過ごせます。建築と書の話がつながっていて、ただの体験とは違う深さがありました。
Tomar clases particulares de shodo con Yoshioka fue muy placentero y didáctico. La atmósfera que logra crear durante la clase con música relajante y aceites esenciales es muy zen e inspiradora. En cada sesión trabajamos kanjis diferentes, algunos de gran dificultad. Me gustó su metodología para enseñarme los trazos y el manejo del pincel. Es un gran maestro y una persona muy atenta y amable, siempre a la escucha de todas las dudas y consultas. Le estoy muy agradecida por todo lo aprendido y el rápido avance que logré en tan pocas sesiones. Lo recomiendo mucho para quien quiera aprender caligrafía japonesa o simplemente tener la experiencia del shodo y llevarse un bello recuerdo de este arte.
After a pleasant walk, away from the crowds, in the Otesuji district, we took part in a wonderful calligraphy experience that was clear and accessible, with thoughtful guidance to choose and write a personalized kanji, and to leave with a digital version of our work. A great opportunity to experience Japanese culture up close.
What a great experience! The master really takes care to make the whole process simple and easy to understand. He has a great presentation that helps you understand the basics of writing Kanji. He then helps you pick a personalized kanji that fits your personality and style. After you’ve chose your Kanji, you’ll get plenty of time to practice while the master gives you advice. Finally, when you’re ready it’s time to get Zen! Calligraphy isn’t about being perfect but about being present and writing the Kanji with intention and purpose! You’ll get a beautiful postcard that you can mail to friends and family. The unique part about this experience is that the master will digitize your unique work and you can use it as a logo, tattoo design, business cards etc etc. The shop name is Shologo - “sho” comes from shodo which is the Japanese word for calligraphy and “logo” well that’s the word for logo. So it’s a Japanese calligraphy logo!Enjoy your time here and then visit the wonderful area of Otesuji and enjoy some Fushimi sake!

I loved this Japanese calligraphy experience in Fushimi Momoyama. It was easy to visit after Fushimi Inari, and the area itself was beautiful with many sake breweries nearby. The studio was calm and private, and the teacher made everything feel relaxed and welcoming. This was one of the most meaningful cultural experiences I had in Kyoto, and it made me want to continue calligraphy at home.
