Aka-chan / Tokyo — Everyone talks about Shinjuku Ni Chome as the center of gay Tokyo because of all the dance clubs and go-go boys there. That can be fun but probably more so if you're in your 20's. On the other hand, I was surprised to discover Shimbashi has over 80 bars targeted mostly to older gays who aren't into partying. The key difference is that most of them are small and hidden away in multi-floor buildings.Jamie W. and I were happy to come upon Aka-chan on the second floor of a nondescript building in an alley. There was no window, so when we opened the door, we were relieved to be greeted so warmly by everyone in the bar like we were Norm and Cliff. Opened nearly three decades ago, the bar is owned by a dapper man in his 70's, Akano, and his cherubic mate Toru. This is not a place to ask for a tropical cocktail.Drinks were back to basic here, so we stuck with whiskey and sake and couldn't have spent more than ¥4,000 for our entire bill. That included the Japanese appetizers that Toru dished out liberally. However, it was the conviviality of the company that made our evening so memorable. The language barrier wasn't a problem, and the three regulars next to us were an absolute riot with karaoke the big activity here. One of them thoughtfully sang a note-perfect rendition of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" in our honor. Akano turned out to be an established composer himself and warbled a couple of his own songs. Neither Jamie nor I were brave enough to sing this time since everyone was singing like professionals. We'll definitely be back well practiced in conversational Japanese and the Burt Bacharach songbook.DRINKS - 4.5 stars...no pina coladas here, basic drinks, potent enough and cheap...and free foodAMBIANCE - 5 stars...like hanging out in Akano and Toru's denSERVICE - 5 stars...felt like familyTOTAL - 5 stars...get your gay on in Shimbashi
Aka-chan was absolutely lovely. When we arrived on a rainy weeknight, the owners and patrons were gathered and chatting and laughing. They were very friendly and welcoming. The bar is decorated to make you feel like you are at home. We enjoyed some beer and a small appetizer, which was very yummy. My partner and I had a fun time singing karaoke and laughing with everyone. Thank you, Aka-chan for your kindness, hospitality, delicious food, and fun time. If we are ever in Tokyo again, I would love to come back!

We had an amazing time at Aka-Chan! We actually ended up going twice during our trip. It’s the kind of cozy, tucked-away bar that instantly feels like home. It’s a small second-floor spots you might miss if you didn’t know to look for it, but absolutely worth finding. The owners are incredibly kind, and that warmth really defines the whole place. It’s clear they’ve created a space where everyone feels welcome, whether you’re a regular or just stopping in for the first time. The patrons are just as friendly and encouraging, which makes a huge difference. The karaoke is the heart of it. It’s such a fun setup, and people genuinely love to sing and cheer each other on. The crowd is more relaxed and laid-back, which makes it easy to jump in and enjoy yourself without feeling any pressure. This isn’t a place that’s about a viral drink or a social media moment. Rather, it’s about the experience, the people, and just having a great time together. By the end of the night, it really did feel less like a bar and more like being welcomed into someone’s home.Definitely one of our favorite experiences in Tokyo.
