It's a very cool path with a ton of bamboo! We only found one crab 🦀 but maybe we'll have more lucky next time. Actually at the nearby Hie Shrine in town I saw a crab too, so keep your eyes peeled!Update: We came back the following year in August 2026 and found dozens of crabs this time! 🦀 🦀 🦀 I think it helped that it was a sunny day after rain. Some were even scaling the mossy walls. It was a bit slippery so please wear good shoes.
I never crabs could exist in a forest. This blew my mind and is well worth the short detour. You need to be still for the crabs to emerge. Thank you to whoever created this attraction
THEY’RE REAL.When I was in Kyoto during University, one day I took a hike over the western mountains just to see what was there. On the trail by a creek in the hills, I came across some crabs. Inland, freshwater, mountain forest crabs.Fast forward a few years and I’ve lost the photos I took, and part of me started to wonder if I had imagined it or made it up in a dream. Crabs in the mountains? Surely not!But today in Izu, I saw a dot on the map for Crab Walk, and vowed to go in search of this carcinoid cryptid, up an abandoned road into the hills.And, right on the map point: forest crab. Alive, scuttling along. Real.
WOW what a hidden gem. A truly unique experience, definitely recommend checking it out, other than the bamboo walk. Must see when visiting Japan ❤️🦀 Got there just before sunset and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop.
