It's a great hike, but takes time to get there from Shinjuku. There is a bus to the trailhead but runs hourly so take a taxi for $30 if you don't feel like waiting. The trail itself is fantastic: well maintained, easy to follow with frequent signposts detailing distance to and from destinations. The walk is a combination of steep and gentle sections past many waterfalls, over bridges and through a dense forest. It takes a while before the first view of the forest, which is a sweeping expanse of trees and mountains. The downside is the deviation to Mt Aso. This trail was so heavily overgrown and crossed by fallen logs that it is virtually impossible to follow. There is an alternate route from Mt. Hinode but I didn't go that way. The route to Hinode is very well maintained with log steps to the summit. Once there you can relax at several benches scattered around. The final leg is downhill through the forest, where you might encounter deer. The path is easy to follow, wide and well maintained. The final stage is down a picturesque road alongside a river. The bus stop, still hourly, is soon after you emerge from the forest.
