This detailed bronze likeness of Koizumi Yakumo (小泉 八雲), commemorates the man who lived out his last years here in Shinjuku City, where he died at the age of 54 on September 26, 1904.Born Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, and widely known as Lafcadio Hearn in the West, he made his living as a writer, translator, and teacher in Japan. After traveling to Japan in 1890, ostensibly to escape Western materialism, he quickly abandoned his initial plans to work for a publishing house, and instead went to work for an English newspaper, the Kobe Chronicle, and teach at various schools. He would go on to publish several papers and books that introduced Japanese culture and literature to Westerners.Between 1896 – 1903, he taught English literature at Tokyo Imperial University, before moving on to nearby Waseda University. In the short 14 years between 1890 and 1904, Hearn fell in love in love with and married Koizumi Setsu, the proud daughter of a samurai, became a Buddhist and a Japanese citizen, and legally changed his name to Koizumi Yakumo.
