旧五重塔跡 Site of the Former Five-Story PagodaA five-story pagoda is a type of Buddhist stupa that houses the relics of Buddha (the remains of Shakyamuni Buddha), and has been built in temples since ancient times. This place dates back to the first year of Keian (1648) in the Edo period. This is the site where the former National Treasure five-story pagoda (wooden, 33 meters tall), rebuilt by Tokugawa Iemitsu, once stood. It was located on the opposite side from the current five-story pagoda. The five-story pagoda of Senso-ji Temple was built in the fifth year of Tenkei (942) by Taira no Kinmasa. It was founded by [name omitted], and although it burned down several times afterward,It is being rebuilt from time to time. During the Edo period, the five-story pagoda rebuilt by Iemitsu was located at Kan'ei-ji Temple in Ueno. Along with the pagodas of Tennoji Temple in Yanaka and Zojoji Temple in Shiba, it was affectionately known as one of the "Four Pagodas of Edo."It was unfortunately destroyed by fire during the war in 1945.
