In February 2026, for nearly a month-long vacation in Japan, I stayed in a room at nestay inn tokyo ueno Airbnb with two other people. That was the recommended maximum number of people for one of these rooms. This was only our second trip to Japan ever and our first Airbnb stay in Japan. We wanted to get a feel for what daily life was like there.I would say this Airbnb was mostly satisfactory. The host was generally pretty communicative whenever we had questions, and most of the features and amenities were relatively straightforward. There was only one bed and one couch that could turn into a bed with a futon. The couple I went with got the bed, while I got the sofa-plus-futon combo. I thought it was comfortable enough as a 5'6", 150 lb male at the time.It had all the things I came to expect from a stay in Japan: a sink, a bathroom, a washer (but no dryer, since that's not how laundry works in Japan), a shower and bath combo with temperature controls, and a wall heater/air conditioner.Since Japan likes to hang laundry outside to dry in the sun, we were given hangers as well as a rack with lots of hooks for hanging laundry on our small backyard balcony. We were provided three total towels for the bathroom, plus things like Nestay-themed cups for drinking water, cleaning supplies, shower, soap, even some starter detergent. This area is in the Iriya neighborhood, which was very, quiet and comfortable. It's generally full of older people and very safe, as expected in Japan. You're a 2-minute walk from a supermarket called Inageya, a 2-minute walk from 7-Eleven, a 5-minute walk from FamilyMart, and near a bunch of other stores like Daiso and even a tax-free shop. There are also a decent number of local restaurants and stores, so if you want to support local businesses, you can do that—which I definitely tried to do as much as possible. So the location was great. The host was communicative, and the stuff provided in the Airbnb was satisfying enough. So what were the flaws? While they recommend a max of three people in a room, it still feels very small for that many. If I kept my sofa bed laid out, that was literally all the floor space I had left—since the couple with the bed only had a sliding door separating us. We were basically right next to each other. While it was nice to have a regular bed, a sofa bed, and a futon, there were some minor issues—like a little bit of hair on the bed and blankets when we arrived. Not enough to worry me, but it made me question how thorough the cleaners were before we arrived.Maybe this was due to not knowing enough Japanese, but it took a while to figure out how to properly heat the bath. I could probably make a tutorial out of it, but I think there should be clearer instructions (especially for foreigners) on how to set the temperature and use all the various controls. Those were really the only major issues I had with this Airbnb at nestay inn tokeu ueno. It was definitely in a good area, and being just a 2-minute walk from Iriya Station was very helpful for getting on the Hibiya Line to make any other notable train transfers we needed to many traveling we did around Tokyo. While this place can work for three people if you're trying to save money, I personally recommend two people at most for maximum comfort because it is pretty small. But it does look nice overall and is in a nice area, so I recommend it if you're considering it.Being one stop away from Ueno, a fairly big city with a decent amount to do, also helps.
