What a truly wonderful experience! It was a privilege to learn about Kintsugi and practice this ancient art under the guidance of master Showzi. We were deeply touched by the philosophical meaning behind it — the idea that beauty can emerge from imperfection and repair. The tea ceremony was a beautiful immersion into Japanese culture, and the perfect complement to the workshop. Taking a handcrafted piece home with us was the ideal final touch — something we will treasure greatly. Thank you so much for having us.
I engaged in the 10-day workshop with Showzi Sensei and subsequently continued on studying with him in Tokyo at his studio once a month. This is a true authentic Japanese apprentice style learning, which means you learn the art of kintsugi with a Master through experience and hard work, not through notes and lectures. Kintsugi is complex and requires discipline and focus. Sensei Showzi models these qualities in his own way of working alongside you in the studio. He and his wife are kind, welcoming, and patient. Just to be in his studio filled with his kintsugi pieces, his artwork, many antique pottery and lacquerware is an honorary experience. Don't miss the opportunity to study and experience being in the presence of a Master! I will take my studies and experiences with me for the rest of my life.
Kintsugi Workshops with Showzi-sensei is an unforgettable experience. The instruction is clear, patient, and inspiring, making even the delicate process of kintsugi feel approachable and meaningful. Showzi-sensei not only teaches technique but shares the philosophy behind the art, transforming broken pottery into something more beautiful, and in doing so, inviting reflection on resilience and healing. The atmosphere is welcoming, the pacing calm, and the results deeply rewarding. I left with more than just a repaired vessel. I left with a renewed appreciation for imperfection and the traditions of Japan. Highly recommended for anyone seeking both craft and insight.
I completed the one day workshop and had such a great experience learning about traditional kintsugi methods that I signed up for the whole week course. Throughout the week, I worked on mending several pieces of pottery with guidance and historical teachings from Sensei Showzi Tsukamoto and a daily tea ceremony. It’s a magical and meditative practice that I thoroughly enjoyed. Sensei’s wife, Natsuyo, was a great host, and one of the kindest and most jovial people I’ve ever met. Loved this experience and recommend!!
I had the privilege of attending this workshop earlier this year. Sensei and his team are a marvelous group of people! I signed up for a 12 day master class and attended the half-day experience to kick off my journey there. I will focus on my portion of the experience for my review. The half-day experience is beautifully put together. Sensei and his team walk you through the process of Kintsugi From start to finish in several hours. You will learn the technical details of the traditional process of the craft. Each member of his team puts their heart and soul into the experience.Part of the experience is a traditional samurai tea ceremony which, in and of itself, would be worth the price of admission. You learned so many things about the tea ceremony, the history of Kisugi and the related Kraft forms involved in it. You are served tea in tea bowls that are hundreds of years old. It is a very rich experience. At the end of the half-day experience, you leave with a keepsake, a mug that you completed on your journey that day. Everything about the day is outstanding. You learn technical details of the craft, a rich history of it, and everything with the tea ceremony. If you’re in Tokyo, I would highly recommend making time to experience this. You will not regret it.
A truly unique workshop by Master of Kintsugi, Master Maki-e and Master of Tea, Showzi Tsukamoto. Dive into an artisan technique of repairing what is broken, made possible by a clever stepwise method allowing to go through each and every step in a single afternoon that normally requires at least 3 weeks. Showzi and his apprentice Toshiko Miki will guide you through the process and explain the philosophy behind it too. Showzi and his wife welcome you in their house to attend the workshop. The workshop is called ‘Kintsugi in 1 day’ and can be booked through AirBnB.

I participated in the 4-hour workshop and had an incredible experience! Showzi, Tashiko and Datsuyo have carefully created an unforgettable hands-on experience for those interested in a taste of Kintsugi! It was so special to be welcomed into Showzi’s workshop, learn basic techniques and to experience a tea ceremony with precious Kintsugi pieces! The hosts were warm and welcoming, and I didn’t want to leave. 5 stars!
