I’ve been at Coto for about a year now, and I’m really enjoying it. The teachers here are so professional and caring; they really make an effort to help you and challenge you to do your best. The Yokohama campus is also comfortable and well-equipped. Plus, the student community is super supportive and friendly.In my experience, private lessons are the best option. You get to set your own pace and feel comfortable. The intensive classes are very JLPT focused if that’s what you need.
If you're in Japan and wanting to learn Japanese, I would highly suggest giving Coto a try. I'm currently in the Beginner 2 class and have been with Coto since Beginner 1. I've found the group setting to be really fun and I have learned so much since joining.Something worth mentioning is that each course will have multiple teachers (usually 3). Each teacher has their own teaching style so it might take some getting used to but everyone is super helpful and nice.
Class: Intensive CourseCurrent Level: B3, advancing to B4Location: Yokohama CampusBackground: I have been enrolled in the Intensive Course since May 2026. I started off in Beginner 1, tested out/skipped Beginner 2, and currently in Beginner 3. I will be moving onto Beginner 4 starting July 2026.TL;DR: Coto Academy has been great for my Japanese learning and comprehension and I would highly recommend. The classes have given me more confidence to speak Japanese day to day, and I am able to see my level of comprehension grow. I'm also reading more Japanese (on trains, TV, etc) and able to grasp what I am reading.Prior to enrolling into Coto Academy, I used a haphazard approach of self-studying Japanese (various books, apps, online tools, etc..). These methods gave me a decent background with the Japanese language, but it lacked structure and I wouldn't stick with it. With this in mind, I decided to enroll at Coto Academy and it has tremendously improved my Japanese on a day-to-day basis.Staff: The staff at Coto Academy are excellent. From the teachers to the front desk, everyone I have interacted with has been extremely helpful, friendly, and encouraging.Class Size: The class size of the intensive courses are small, but that is by design. The smaller class size allows for more dedicated attention from the teachers - it almost feels like I have a personal tutor at times. Also, the small classes make it easier to network with your fellow classmates and form better camaraderie. In short: it makes classes fun.Class Structure: There are no surprises as what you will learn day to day as the syllabus is provided to you via the Student File. This makes it easy to anticipate what you'll be learning and gives you the chance to review beforehand. You will also learn new vocabulary, kanji, and practice speaking. Each lesson provides more clarity into Japanese sentence structure. The class materials are excellent too. Depending on what level you are in will determine what books and materials you will use. For instance, at my current class level we are utilizing the Genki textbooks.Location: The Yokohama campus is a great location as its only a few minutes walk from Yokohama station. There are plenty of attractions/stores/restaurants/sites/etc nearby. This makes it easy to take what you have learned that day and put it to real-work practice. I've often gone out with classmates to order food/drinks/etc and utilize the Japanese we learned in class.Overall, Coto Academy has provided the much-needed structure and framework I needed to better understand Japanese. They provide a fun, safe, and engaging environment to learn Japanese, and this has kept me motivated to continue pushing myself.
I came to Japan on an overseas assignment and needed to learn both business Japanese and conversational Japanese. Over the past six months, Coto Yokohama has been an incredible support for me.Even before arriving in Japan, the staff kindly guided me through the process, which helped me prepare with confidence. I also learned a great deal from the teachers and truly appreciated their dedication and instruction.The facilities on the 5th and 8th floors were comfortable and well-maintained. It was especially convenient that I could use the 8th floor for self-study when I didn’t have classes. I also personally enjoyed the complimentary tea service, which was a very nice touch.Although I have to finish my classes this month due to unavoidable circumstances, I would love to study again at Coto Yokohama if I have the opportunity in the future.Thank you very much for the wonderful six months.日本への派遣勤務が決まり、ビジネス日本語と日常会話を学ぶ必要がありました。この6か月間、コト横浜校で本当に多くのサポートをいただきました。渡日前からスタッフの皆さまがとても親切に案内してくださり、安心して準備を進めることができました。また、先生方からも多くのことを学び、大変充実した時間を過ごすことができました。5階と8階の施設もとても快適で、授業がない時間には8階で自習ができるのも便利でした。特に、紅茶を無料でいただける点は、私にとってとても嬉しいポイントでした。やむを得ない事情により今月で受講を終了することになりましたが、また機会があればぜひコト横浜校で学びたいと思っています。6か月間、本当にありがとうございました。
