A small, rather an unassuming stone monument built in 1943 to commemorate the municipalization of Matsudo City. This monument is one of the many "National Glory Enhancement Monuments" that were erected during that time. The year marked the 2,603rd year of the Imperial House Calendar, a period characterized by an extended war with China and increasingly challenging conditions during the Pacific War.This was a couple of years after the festive and nationalistic celebrations of the Kohki 2,600 year, which my late mother recalled as her first memory. She vividly remembered witnessing the dream-like illuminated parade of townspeople celebrating this significant year with lit hand lanterns when she was just six years old in 1940.While it may be easy to dismiss the monument as a forgotten remnant of a militaristic era, its simplicity and the reasons behind its modest placement are intriguing. It is not located in front of the new town hall in the city centre even at that time, but rather almost at the edge of town, beside a solemn Asama shrine. The monument's survival over time is both impressive and a little thought-provoking.
