I cannot recommend MADARA at KANJI TOKYO highly enough. I contacted him on very short notice near the end of my trip to Japan because I wanted to commission two small hanging calligraphy scrolls, one for myself and one for my sister, using our family name, 浅沼. From my very first message, his communication, professionalism, and customer service were exceptional.MADARA took the time to understand exactly what I was looking for. I wanted the kanji rendered as an artistic calligraphy interpretation rather than simply written in a standard style. He explained his process beautifully: how he considers the shape of the characters, movement of the brush, use of space, and strength and softness of the ink to turn the name into a work of art. He also explained that although both scrolls would contain the same kanji, each would have its own subtle differences in brush movement and expression. That was exactly what I wanted and made the two pieces feel much more personal. What impressed me just as much as the artwork was the level of service. My schedule was extremely tight, and MADARA rearranged his own production schedule so that he could complete my pieces immediately. We communicated entirely in English through WhatsApp, and he patiently walked me through every part of the process. He showed me the available scroll styles and colors, arranged gift wrapping for both pieces, and even provided protective tubes so I could safely bring them home on my flight to the United States.Because I was traveling and could not conveniently visit his studio, he offered to ship the finished scrolls directly to my Tokyo hotel. He personally contacted the hotel to confirm that the front desk could receive and hold the package for me, provided the tracking information, monitored the shipment, and messaged me again when he received confirmation that it had arrived. He even photographed the finished scrolls and asked whether I wanted to see them beforehand or keep them as a surprise. The finished pieces are beautiful. They are clearly related, yet each has its own individual character and expression, exactly as he had described. My sister and I now have matching but unique works of Japanese calligraphy connected to our family name and to my time in Japan, which makes them particularly meaningful to us.The entire experience, from my initial inquiry to receiving the finished scrolls at my hotel, was remarkably smooth and personal. MADARA went far beyond what I would normally expect from a commissioned artwork, especially considering how little notice I gave him. If you are visiting Japan and are considering a personalized piece of Japanese calligraphy for yourself, your family, or as a gift, I would wholeheartedly recommend KANJI TOKYO. The artwork is wonderful, and the care MADARA puts into both his work and his customers is equally impressive.
MADARA is an exceptionally gifted artist who goes above and beyond for the customer. I reached out to him online and he embodied Japanese hospitality. Would highly advise anyone interested in buying traditional Japanese calligraphy to go to Kanji Tokyo.
I participated Madara's workshop with my foreign husband and our children (aged 14 and 11). Even though we had no previous experience of calligraphy, we were able to enjoy the experience thanks to Madara’s clear and patient instructions. The choice of characters used to write our English names in kanji was also wonderful; each character has its own meaning, and I could sense the wish that our future lives would be even better. The T-shirt designs to choose from were also lovely, and we ended up with T-shirts that are truly one-of-a-kind. We all love them and are happy to wear them. The hand towel with the cherry blossom drawing and my name on it is also very stylish and pretty, and I have it displayed on my wall. The second time, I took part with a friend and her family. Their children were aged 11 and 8, but they learnt the basics of calligraphy and practised writing their favourite kanji characters; they seemed to have a great time.It was my friend’s first time trying calligraphy too, but she said she found it fascinating and thoroughly enjoyed it, from the explanation of the history of calligraphy to practising the characters. The T-shirts with Madara's drawings and names in Kanjis were wonderful, and you can feel Madara’s warm hospitality spirit through the workshop. She was delighted, saying it had become a lovely memory and souvenir of her time in Japan.I highly recommend it as a unique and wonderful experience in Japan.
Our son's head coach, who has been an incredible mentor, was leaving, so we wanted to give him a truly special farewell gift. We decided to have a custom artwork made with the Kanji written boldly in the center, with his name beautifully converted into Kanji characters written slightly smaller alongside it.The shop was extremely supportive and attentive throughout the entire process—guiding us through font styles, explaining the meaning behind the Kanji selections, and even customizing the framing. When we presented it to him the other day, he was deeply moved, he said. We are so glad we made this choice. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a meaningful gift.
Absolutely love how Madara’s piece fits into my space—it feels both grounding and special. Seeing my family name expressed so beautifully in Kanji makes it incredibly meaningful to me, and it’s something I’ll treasure for a long time. Thank you, Madara, for the artistry and care you put into creating it!
If you’re looking for a master calligrapher to create a custom Kanji tattoo design, Madara is the real deal.As a therapist and Zen practitioner, I wanted my first tattoo to embody a lifelong commitment to compassionate action. Fittingly, I decided upon the name of the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion, Kanzeon (観世音), whose name calls one to “perceive the sounds/cries of the world.”I am so unspeakably fortunate to have found Madara, whose calligraphy immediately struck me as the work of an artist who had lived, loved, lost, and resolved to love again. I knew that he was the one to bring Kanzeon to life.Working with Madara was one of the most rewarding collaborations of my life. Throughout our email correspondence, Madara astonished me with his accurate intellectual and empathic understanding of my case, asking questions and offering suggestions that I hadn’t even considered but which hit the mark precisely.I requested that he use a sample of the calligraphy of Dōgen Zenji, the founder of Soto Zen Buddhism in Japan, as inspiration. Madara provided me with several draft images as he carefully refined the work, describing, for example, his rationale behind the brush he selected (horsehair, so as to approximate the materials available in the 13th century, when Dōgen lived) as well as precise observations regarding his efforts to express the style and spirit of Dōgen’s work without merely imitating it. I was especially impressed when Madara sent me a few beautiful videos of him at work in his studio, allowing me to observe as Kanzeon blossomed from the tip of his brush. This, moreover, helped me to understand that calligraphy is not a matter of the brush alone; it is a practice which involves and expresses the entire body!At the conclusion of our collaboration, Madara provided vector images and high-resolution scans of the final work, which my tattoo artist used to faithfully render Madara’s masterful calligraphy stroke by stroke. It is such a privilege to carry Madara’s work with me. I vow to honor his efforts for as long as I live, fully dedicating myself to living in accordance with Kazeon’s call to perceive the cries of the world and to respond with skillful compassion. 🖤🙏
I had a very special experience working with Madara on a personal tattoo design. From the very beginning, he understood my thoughts and the meaning behind them, and transformed them into a piece of calligraphy that feels deeply personal to me.The entire process was calm, respectful, and thoughtful. It never felt like a simple service, but rather like a shared journey. The final result is now part of me, and it carries a meaning that goes far beyond the design itself.I am truly grateful for this experience and can highly recommend KANJI TOKYO to anyone looking for something meaningful and personal.
