At first there is a iaido show, then a tameshigiri show, then you practice using wooden swords, and then you get to cut a tatami mat. Afterwards, there is a guided zen meditation and a short shakuhachi flute play. In between you get a lot of info on samurai and katana and Japanese history. All the while you wear a kimono/yukata.The staff is very friendly and the whole experience is quite enjoyable.

Our teacher spoke perfect English and took his time to explain the meaning of many things. Cutting of the mats with the 150 yr old katana was a surreal experience. They take many photos for you that are excellent and provide them at no additional cost. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a personal experience and look into the history of the samurai. There is a lot of history at the samurai mansion to see and appreciate. At the end of the katana lesson you have a period of time to meditate towards achieving zen.

We enjoyed learning about samurais and also the katana. We got a quick lesson with the wood katanas then we got to hold the real katana and also try to cut with one! It was exhilarating! We finished off with a zen meditation session that was very relaxing. The whole thing takes place in a house built over 200 years ago! Awesome place.

This experience was AMAZING. We were lucky enough to be the the only two people participating and we had a great experience in every possible way. This is a must when visiting Kyoto and a great way to understand the samurai culture in a real samurai house. I would recommend this experience 100%!!
