五島青方のウバメガシの特徴
ウバメガシは九州に少ない貴重な植物です。
地元の紀州出身の漁民が持ち込んだ歴史があります。
ここでしか見られない珍しい景観が楽しめます。
There are a few ubamegashi on the island of Kyushu and they even grow in Goto too. This tree was planted by Lord Aokata, ruler of Kamigoto. This place is located near the Ebisu Shrine and Oso Catholic Church. These trees are kinda tall. Love the trees! 🎶
ウバメガシは九州には少なく、五島には自生しません。この木は、慶長年間（１５９７）に紀州からこの地に移住した漁師たちが、紀州から持参して植えたものです。青方郷大曽字元納屋の恵比寿神社のそばにあり、幹の周りが約２ｍ６０、樹高約１３ｍ。地上３ｍのところから多くの枝が出て、円状に繁茂しています。
この地に移り住んだ紀州出身の漁民が漁船の各種材料として持ち込んだものとのこと。
This rare, giant ubamegashi (Quercus phillyraeoides) tree is an important resource that imparts the history of deep-rooted links between Kamigoto’s fishing industry and the Kishu Domain. It is located next to the hut that contains the Ebisu Shrine in Oso Village in Aokata. The circumference of the tree’s trunk is about 2 m 60 cm and its height is approximately 13 m. Branches sprawl out concentrically from the trunk starting 3 meters from the base of the tree. Ubamegashi trees are not native to Goto and there are only a few of them in Kyushu. They belong to the Cyclobalanopsis sub-genus in the Fagaceae family. The wood from this sub-genus is generally hard due to its small leaves and slow growth, but the wood from the ubamegashi is the hardest. Because its wood is so firm, it is used to make oars and other fishing gear. Dye for fishing nets is also extracted from its bark. The wood is also used to create the world’s hardest charcoal, “binchotan.” When fishermen Norimura and Dotsu moved to this area from Kishu during the Keicho era (1597), they brought this tree with them and planted it. The locals call it “Kishugashi” (Kishu Beech). On August 22nd of Showa 53 (1978), the “Goto Aokata Ubamegashi Beech” was designated a Prefectural Natural Monument as a valued resource that conveys the history of Kamigoto’s fishing industry. Incidentally, the Prefecturally Designated Natural Monument, “Fukue Gosha Ubamegashi” located in the Gosha Shrine in Kamiozucho, Goto City was a cutting of this tree that was planted by Lord Aokata.
