One of our best memories on the Kumano Kodo was staying at Shino's place. Experiencing the stay in a 140yr old japanese house in this remote village and the delicious oishi food prepared and delivered by Shino was amazing. She also arranged a ride back to the trail the next morning, a wonderful host!
This 140 year old traditional Japanese house is beautiful and private. Shino is an incredible host, and the food she prepared for us during our walk on the Kumano Kodo was delicious. She even arranged for a driver to pick us up and take us back to the trail in Takahara in the morning, which we were very grateful for. We were lucky enough to stay at her other guest house, Kumanoyasai Base, in Chikatsuyu the next night, so we got to enjoy two days of her food, hospitality, and humor. Highly recommend staying at both of these places! Thank you, Shino!
It’s a great experience to stay at this traditional Japanese house. We feel so blessed to taste the delectable meals and lunch box.The living room is cozy, and the tatami bed, comfortable. We are really impressed withShining San’s attending to details and heartwarming hospitality. The 2-night stay makes our pleasant Kumano Kodo hiking trip all the more enjoyable.
The host Shino prepared a good bento dinner for us. Next morning, we had a breakfast set and also a lunch box for our hike. The house is about 140 years old but have enough amenities to make it comfortable. There is also a washing machine. However, do note there is no tooth brush or yukata. Bring those along if you are planning to stay here. This is not along the Kumano Kodo route, and there is a steep climb down, which takes about 30-40 mins. Similarly, it is a steep climb up to re-join the route. It will be an issue if you are tired and will need to make this diversion to get to this Minsuku in the afternoon after your hike.
My husband and I had the pleasure of staying for one night in this charming Japanese house while we were hiking the Kumano Kodo. This traditional Japanese home, with its rich history of over 140 years, instantly transports you.Despite its age, the house has been thoughtfully updated, particularly the bathroom which features a wonderful deep bathtub. After a strenuous day on the first leg of our hike, indulging in the hot bath was an absolute treat. We can't express enough gratitude to our hostess, Shino, who went above and beyond to make our stay memorable! She helped us arrange baggage service to our next accommodation, which was a lifesaver. We quickly realized that we had overpacked and wouldn't be able to continue the journey carrying our heavy bags. Shino's assistance was invaluable. It's important to note that the house is situated about 2 miles from the Kumano Kodo trail at Takahara, and there's a descent of 700 feet into the valley below. While this might be a bit challenging, especially after hiking from trails start, the experience and hospitality at this home make it well worth the effort! We will definitely be back!
My wife and I stayed one night here while doing the Kumano Kodo. Traditional Japanese home 150 years old. Shino, the hostess, was amazing. Her english was really good and helped settled in and made us feel at home. She is a great cook too and dinner and breakfast were delicious. Just note that the house is a about 2 miles from the Kumano Kodo trail at Takahara with 700ft of descent into the valley below. You need to make those 2 miles and 700 ft back to the trail unless you catch a ride.
Such an amazing place and Shino is an incredibly gracious host. The house is very old with a lot of charm to it, exactly what we were hoping for. We got the breakfast, supper and lunch box and everything has been fantastic with ample portions. One of our group members is a picky eater but really enjoyed the food as well. The one downside is that the place is quite far from the Kumano Kodo, especially since we had to take "route B" but Shino's instructions were very clear and she was very responsive.
リノベーションされた部屋が最高に落ち着きました。部屋にはなんでも揃っていて快適な夜が過ごせました。夜ご飯のお弁当も美味しかったです!強いてゆうなら使い捨ての歯磨きをおいといて欲しかったです!
Amazing host Shino made us feel welcome and timely helped us with all our questions about getting around the area main sights. She cooked us dinner and breakfast both delicious and crafted to perfection. The lunch box to go was so tasty and a saving grace during the long trail to Chikatsuyu that took us from 10:30 am to 16:00 pm today! We spent a great and warm night surrounded by nature and calm, we enjoyed tea in the garden and did our journaling in this authentic and yet renovated ancient house. We loved the design and the peaceful space, it recharged us. We wish to come back to continue on the Kumano trails and stay here again! To the visitors that consider that the location is a bit too far from the trails: yes it adds up another 45 mins most of which uphill but we realized that they aren’t all too bad as a warm up to catch up with the rest of the trail if compared to all the benefits of staying at Shinos place.Thank you from all our heart, Miro and Juli

My wife and I had an amazing stay at Shino-san's accomodation, which is tucked away from the main road in a small hill. We also stayed at her other accomodation in Chikatsuyu - equally great. This one is worth the detour from the main route. On top of the lovely meals, I considered it a privilege to be able to stay in a 140-year-old house like this one. I admire Japanese carpentry and woodworking, and this house is a living example of many facets of the tradition - unreal to be able to live in it for a night. Wish we had more time here.
