Statue of Jigoro Kano-senselBy Sculptor Fumio AsakuraJigoro Kano (1860-1938) founded the discipline of Kodokan Judo in 1882 after graduating from Tokyo Imperial University In 1893, Kano was named principal of the Higher Normal School, the predecessor of the University of Tsukuba. During his 23 years in that capacity, he devoted untold time and effort to inspiring students to participate in sports and accepted large numbers of students from China.In 1909, Kano became the first Asian member of the International Olympic Committee. Two years later, he spearheaded the establishment of the Japan Sports Association Kano, a man who truly committed his life to promoting the dual causes of education and sports, also worked tirelessly to spread his ideals of "Maximum Efficiency of Energy Use" and "Mutual Prosperity for Self and Others." 昨年：2019年、筑波大学を訪れた時に拝観しました。本当にここが「いだてん」で出てきた「東京高等師範学校」に連なる大学なんだ、と実感しました。
