Shunkō-den, often referred to as the Imperial Sanctuary, is a ceremonial structure within the Kyoto Imperial Palace whose significance lies primarily in its ritual function rather than its architectural scale. The building was constructed in 1915 specifically for the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Taishō and was reused during the enthronement of Emperor Shōwa. It served as a temporary sanctuary for the Divine Mirror, one of the Three Imperial Regalia of Japan. The Divine Mirror (Yata no Kagami) is traditionally associated with wisdom, sincerity, and moral clarity. According to Shinto belief, it embodies the presence of the sun goddess Amaterasu and symbolizes the principle that imperial authority is grounded in truth and self-awareness rather than power or force. During enthronement rituals, the Mirror is not displayed or viewed; its role is symbolic and ritual, emphasizing presence rather than visibility.Architecturally, Shunkō-den reflects this layered concept of sanctity. The interior is divided into progressively restricted zones: the Gejin (Outer Sanctuary), the Naijin (Inner Sanctuary), and the Nainaijin (Innermost Sanctuary), where the Divine Mirror was enshrined. This spatial progression reinforces the idea of controlled access and increasing ritual purity, mirroring the hierarchical structure of the imperial court. The exterior design is restrained and formal, consistent with early 20th-century reconstructions of classical court architecture. Dark natural wood, white wall surfaces, and gilded metal fittings create a dignified but understated appearance, avoiding visual excess in favor of symbolic clarity. The raised floor, surrounding veranda, and steeply pitched roof emphasize separation from ordinary space, underscoring the building’s ceremonial role.Shunkō-den was never intended as a permanent shrine or a space for public worship. Instead, it functioned as a ritual vessel, activated only at exceptional historical moments.

京都御所を訪問。大正天皇が即位の際に神鏡を収めるために造営された建物だそうです。御所の中では新しい建物で金色が光っています。
