Everything came together for a perfect 6-night stay for us at Splash!It's in an fabulous location, right on the beach with breaks right out the front. The house is clean and tidy with decor and knick knacs that made the place cosy and great place to chill out in (which we did when the double typhoons swung by).What made a great place exceptional was Dane and Madoka's hospitality. We count ourselves blessed having met them and being guests in their home.Dane is a great guide to all water activities with his exhaustive knowledge of the area and conditions. I had the privilege of having one of my best sessions on the water with Dane!When conditions weren't right at one spot, there were many other possibilities. Otherwise, there was always something to do. If it wasn't a boat trip with Dane's Seafari Japan, it was experiencing Japan's small-town sights, hospitality, culture and cuisine.Splash is special, and the memories of our time with Dane and Madoka will be treasured. During my trip to Japan, I decided to try surfing for the first time. Based on reviews and convenient proximity to Tokyo, I chose Splash Surf School and Dane especially.It was my best 4 days of the trip: surfing and fishing were awesome. I managed to stand on a wave during the first lesson. Spending time with Dane is also very interesting — he can give you a sense of what it really means to be a surfer, in a deeper way than just riding waves.Highly recommend to anyone

If you sit on a reclining chair on the large wooden terrace and look at the sea in front of the house, you will forget about the time. The owner, Mr. Dane, who is fluent in Japanese and English, has a good personality and makes your trip brighter and more fun. Definitely here is the best Katsuura's guest house. My friends and I came and stayed at splash guesthouse on two different occasions on different trips to Japan. We had amazing authentic homemade Japanese meals and were shown around just like we were one of the family. All of his information and knowledge is first rate and you could tell that he really knows the local culture and everything going on in the region. Fantastic place, right in the middle of Hebara beach. The owner, Dane, is super nice and friendly. He picked us up from the train station and made us feel comfortable and relaxed throughout our entire stay. The guest house has a superb deck overlooking the beach. We had a barbeque in the evening with fellow guests and were able to see a beautiful sunrise in the morning. Dane is always helpful in arranging activities and he sorted out a surfing lesson for us smoothly at the last minute. Breakfast is a bit 1970s style British with just white toast and jam. Some healthier options such as cereal and fruit might be mite suited for the active crowd usually staying at this place. Overall a great stay, and we will gladly come back again.

Very conveniently located. Right on a gorgeous beach. The guest house has a good amount of things to keep you occupied (all rental). We took bikes around the coast which was wonderful. There is a lot of information about the area available. However, it is INCREDIBLY expensive for what you get. You get a room for the night (no double beds) and a piece of toast in the morning. The toilet and shower are communal and time limited. It's a hostel charging hotel prices.Everything costs you extra, including simple things like a lift in the hosts car to a facility he suggests you go to so strongly that you feel like you can't refuse. He's also not very flexible when it comes to getting a lift back to the station after your holiday.The host is pretty intense, so if you're wanting a quiet experience, without 20 minute answers to every simple question, consider staying in the self contained facilities rather than the house itself (and I'm rather a people person...)Also since breakfast is from 7am, you want to go to bed early because the guests' and host's voice will wake you up. Worth a visit if you want to go surfing, but perhaps not the best for everyone.
