This was hands down one of my highlights from the trip to Japan. My husband and I had a private session with Aya, who was an incredible host and welcomed us warmly into her home. She explained the history and significance of the tea ceremony so well. It was a wonderful experience, and delightful to try authentic Kyoto-grown matcha and use the beautiful artisanal tea bowls. This is the real deal and we felt privileged to take part - skip the big classes with the cheap kimono and come here! Aya was even so wonderful as to message us after the session with with tips on Kyoto, and send me details of the history of an artisanal tea bowl I purchased. If you're genuinely interested in the history, rituals, and the relationship to Zen of tea ceremony, I cannot recommend this enough and will remember it for the rest of my life. If we're ever back in Kyoto we'll be back for a flower arranging session!
Absolutely Unforgettable Experience – A True Highlight of Our Trip to JapanOur experience at the Sakura Tea Ceremony with Aya was beyond anything we could have anticipated. Aya, who has been practicing the art of tea for over 45 years, welcomes you into her private home for an incredibly intimate and authentic ceremony. It truly felt like stepping back in time into old Japan — a rare and deeply cultural moment that you won’t find anywhere else.The session is beautifully educational as well. Aya not only prepares and serves matcha with the utmost grace, but she also takes the time to teach you about its history, the intricate rules and traditions behind every movement, and how matcha is sourced and prepared. We were amazed by how much depth there is to what seems like such a simple act.Our group of four (my wife, my parents, and myself) unanimously agreed that this was one of the absolute best experiences we had during our entire trip to Japan. If you are visiting Kyoto, this is truly something you should not miss. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
This is the real deal! If you are looking to experience a traditional tea ceremony, learn the history and technique, I highly recommend booking this. My husband who typically does not typically like matcha, even enjoyed this ceremony and the tea itself. It was a beautiful experience to have, and the host was so kind, warm, and welcoming. She took the time to explain the history, and demonstrated the tradition, and took time to answer our questions as well. If you were hesitating to book this - don’t! One of the best parts of our trip to Kyoto!

Aya and her husband are a dream team! I'm so happy that Sakura Tea Ceremony was my first stop in Kyoto.Aya and her husband warmly welcomed us to their home like we're old friends. My sister and I were actually very late to the time slot that we book -- but they are so kind to let us in and still made the tea ceremony happen for us! I'm so thankful for their hospitality.I won't talk much about the details of the tea ceremony itself. It's an intricacy that you have to experience for yourself. I can just say that Aya is a great teacher that has studied the traditional art since she was young and she knows it very well. She answered every question that I had! Her husband was also kind enough to document the process in photos and videos for us!After the ceremony, they even went overtime to give us recommendation on what to eat and where to go around Kyoto! I feel like I have made new friends here. I will definitely come back to Sakura Tea Ceremony once I'm in Kyoto.
Aya was on time, took her time with us and explained the wonderful history behind the tea ceremony. Her home was clean and beautiful, the tea room was very pleasant, cozy, and historically accurate. We loved the intimate environment, it was easy to book a few days before hand too. We went in casual clothes, make sure to bring socks.We loved getting to be served the matcha and then getting a chance to make it ourselves. Thank you Aya!
