I distinctly remember the sirens that day. I lived with my parents in Yamada, nearby. It had rained heavily for many days already. Everything inside was damp to the touch, and it was hot. Then suddenly the sirens sounded, long and repeating, mournfully calling out volunteers over and over again. We first feared a dam break or a forced water release or flash flood warning. But the news began to filter through slowly, mouth to mouth at first, with the word "Shigeto" and then the single most feared word in the mountains: "land slide". And no one would venture a guess what had happened, until a few hours later by nightfall we all knew from the local TV news station that the worst possible thing had indeed taken place. The village of Shigeto had been destroyed by a massive landslide, and many, many had died. And then even worse, we learned they had died because they had risked their lives to save a man who had been buried in an earlier slide. Noble, yes. Heros of the best kind? Yes. But their village was gone, and they were gone, leaving orphans and other loved ones behind. Yes, I remember the sirens, mournful, howling, speaking what no one wants to hear. It is a sound that leaves you empty inside.Several years later my decending train stopped in Shigeto to wait for an ascending train to pass. I stared up at the scarred hillside, now reinforced with massive stabliizing pillars, a remedy too late. A few minutes later, the ascending train streamed past, and my train lurched slightly and began moving again.
