Tokuto – Teshima’s Ocean View RetreatWow, what a fantastic place. We rented this “house” for two nights, and it was absolutely the right decision.Teshima is a small island, easy to get around and still very authentic. It feels like pure, untouched Japan. We rented bikes to move around the island, which worked perfectly. The house is set up in a traditional Japanese style. There’s one double bed, and you can also sleep on tatami mats. I chose the tatami option — a great experience, and I slept very well. The kitchen is also kept in a traditional way, and you prepare your breakfast on a small gas stove. It worked without any issues, and the hosts had stocked the fridge with everything we needed, including drinks. What I loved most was the house itself and its architecture. It’s a wooden house with sliding walls — the way it used to be in Japan. Staying in a place like this is a real experience. It’s a nice mix between tradition (the structure and layout) and modern comfort (the bathrooms and shower are fully up to date). The garden is beautiful and very well maintained. You can tell that a lot of attention goes into the details.A big thank-you to the owners. She is Japanese and brings the authentic spirit of the country with her. He is Australian, which helps a lot when it comes to communicating with international guests. Together they make a great team.Very well done — truly. I would happily come back, and I will warmly recommend this place to anyone travelling to Japan.
Stayed at Tokuto with my fiancé. The home is so beautiful and spacious. Alan is something so special. He made sure our stay was amazing and gave us all the best info about Teshima. I dont think our stay in Teshima would have been anywhere as good without him.
Tokuto is a cut above the rest. If I ever stay in Teshima again, I’ll return here. Peaceful retreat, thoughtful touches, with a lot of attention to detail from the landscaping to the bathrooms. The host also makes the stay enjoyable with great hospitality. It felt like a family member was looking out for me, but also leaving me to make myself at home. A lot of care is taken and it shows and it is felt. A zen garden for a zen experience.
Amazing house with amazing hosts to tell you about the beauty of the island culture and lifestyle. I highly recommend this as a home base for island hoping to visit the art festival and exhibitions over several days.

Staying at Tokuto ~ Teshima’s Ocean View Retreat for two nights with my partner was one of those rare experiences that quietly stays with you. From the very first moment, Alan made us feel deeply welcome. He is an outstanding host; kind, attentive, and genuinely passionate about sharing the spirit of Teshima. His presence adds soul to the stay, striking the perfect balance between thoughtful care and respectful privacy. The property itself is simply beautiful. Authentic, serene, and perfectly integrated into the island’s landscape, Tokuto feels less like accommodation and more like a true retreat. Every corner reflects simplicity, intention, and a deep respect for nature and place.Waking up to fresh, organic eggs from Alan’s own chickens, or enjoying mandarins grown on the property, were small yet meaningful details that made our mornings unforgettable. These gestures speak of a way of life; slow, honest, and connected to the land.Tokuto is not just a place to stay; it is an invitation to pause, breathe, and truly experience one of the most special islands in the Japanese archipelago. A genuine ocean-view sanctuary where time seems to soften and everything feels just right. We leave with gratitude, beautiful memories, and a strong desire to return. 🌿🪨
