If you are looking for quality, authentic Tokoname-yaki (Tokoname pottery), original art, not just a typical souvenir, you've come to the right place.Takao Ito is the owner and artist, and this store in English is named "Takao Gama" (Takao Kiln).Takao-san is friendly, happy and welcoming. We chose his artist studio for our pottery class because we want to support a local artist.His class is great value as it is small (4 people) we each got a lot of attention and quality information. It is ¥3000 per person which is very reasonable. The clay used is Tokoname clay that had been filtered. It is very fine quality. We had the option of 4-5 glazes and finishes.Takao-San is incredibly talented. Everything in his store is by him and if you notice the vast range of style, you'll see the distinct works by Takao Ito.On one side, the smooth elegant creamy glazes of the pale blue and white vessels - ikebana vases, Heian period courtesans with layers of imperial robes, a warrior in readiness for battle.On the other side, the textural dynamic energy of a TEA-Rex, the fierce protector dogs of a shrine and the wabi-sabi ethos of tea ware.Everything in this store is special. It takes a creative heart to make distinct forms and to be your authentic self.These are not the typical vessels for the tourist dollar. These are pieces of art.Mr Ito is proud of his love for dinosaurs and heavy metal, and he creates what he loves with a joie de vivre. His exuberance for life and joy for what he does is what a true artist should do. He encouraged us to do the same in his class. We were encouraged to ask questions, suggest ideas, even use plants and fun ideas, not just rigid rules.Please do visit to see the range of Mr Ito's talent. If you have time, please take a pottery class. And perhaps you'll find a little but if the artist in your own heart to inspire you to see more beauty and freedom in you life.Thank you Takao-San, we will be back!
This guy is amazing. His work and art style stand out to be very different than anyone else I've seen or met.You can recognise his work as soon as you see it.
