It is a transportation hub that connects to the highway from Ohara to Wakasa via Demachi in the north, to Shirakawagoe (Yamanakagoe) over the Kamo River in the east, and to the city of Kyoto in the south and west.It is known from the inscription that it was erected by 19 local people in April 1868. On four sides, directions and names of 22 destinations are indicated along with distances. conditions are in order. It is not an exaggeration to say that the beautiful granite stone carved with flowing characters is one of the most beautiful signposts in Japan, even though it is new for the age.Along with the signposts of Sanjo Shirakawa Bridge, Gojo Ware, Yoshida Honmachi, and Kitashirakawa Nishimachi, it is a registered cultural property of Kyoto City as a historic site. 天正19年(1591)豊臣秀吉が作った御土居(府立医科大図書館前に跡)の大原口が設けられた場所です。京の七口の1つ、交通の要所で有った事が解ります。洛中から比叡山、近江の国、その奥の若狭の国に通じる起点だったのですね。道標には慶応4年(1868)の設置年、22箇所の名所と19人の寄進者の名前が記され、今は京都市の登録文化財となっています✨
