鋸山から産出される凝灰岩は建築材料として適しており、江戸時代から大規模な採石が行われてきました。当時の採石場の遺跡は今でもソーマウンテン地区で見ることができます。その独特な鋸歯状の地形は、ソーマウンテンという名前の由来にもなりました。房総石は早稲田大学、靖国神社、東京湾要塞など都内の建物に広く使われています。
