Hattoji is a wonderful place most in time in rural Japan, a true Miyazaki experience. The villa will likely be yours and everything is minimal but perfect. You ll be on your own as if the villa were yours. Make sure to bring food and breakfast with you. On the morning you ll be rewarded with a wonderful scenery of the area. Definitely a place worth to visit if you can !

今は日本人より外国人観光客に人気のある施設です。最寄りの駅と言えばJR吉永駅ですが、ここから施設まで約18kmの公共交通機関が無い（備前市運営のバスは本数が少なく停留所が吉永駅ではない）ので、タクシー利用となります。

Thank you Okayama Prefecture for keeping this gorgeous old farmhouse villa open so foreign visitors can appreciate and marvel at traditional Japanese architecture and design. It's one of the best of the original 6 villas (Shiraishi Is is still operating as well) and it's situated in the middle of a picturesque village with many kayabuki-roofed buildings. It's changed little since we first stayed here 30 years ago and the caretaker Maruo-san (rear neighbour) is extremely friendly and helpful. Everything you could need is provided but self-service...make your own futons up with fresh sheets and pillowcases and towels and no condiments at all in the kitchen. It was still cold enough in May for us to snuggle up under the kotatsu and light the irori fireplace (Y500 for charcoal). At 6pm the village loudspeaker signals farmers that it's time to rest and at 5am you can faintly hear the temple prayer bell. Plan your menu and take food, walking shoes and a good book or sketchbook and relax.

Ultieme verblijfplaats voor diegene die de drukke Japanse steden zat is of een keer wil uitrusten op een afgelegen, rurale, bergdorpje. Het gebouw zelf is al heel oud en heeft een traditionele vuurplaats en stenen badkuip. Met een paar moderne aanpassingen is het de perfecte getaway plek. Denk eraan om van tevoren eten in te slaan, aangezien er geen supermarkt in de buurt is en de 2 restaurants die minstens 15-20 lopen zijn niet altijd open zijn. Een betere beleving van het rurale gebied van Japan krijg je niet. Ook kun je er rondlopen in traditionele yakuta, wat een aanrader is voor de zomer.

For us it was an amazing experience. We had the large villa all to ourselves. It was well-appointed and in a beautiful area with loads of different walks, particularly around Mt. Hattoji. Shop for food before heading there because there's nowhere to buy it once you arrive although there are two restaurants - one of them really different. There is an irori with an ingenious and easy way to light it and a goemonburo. It must have been out-of-season because we didn't see a single other tourist for 3 days. I understand that in Autumn, lots of cars come up from the city to look at the leaves. It is about the cheapest accommodation we've had in Japan and amongst the most memorable and enjoyable. The standard map is very much "impressionist" and inaccurate but there is another available if you ask around for it and I suggest you get it before exploring.

We spent just one night here, and were fortunate enough to have the villa to ourselves. Tatami mat rooms, well equipped kitchen, fire in the sitting area, a very beautifully quiet setting. Enjoyed a stroll around the village. There is a couple of restaurants nearby - one closed when we were there, the other near the camp ground with very friendly English speaking owner. |We hired a car to get here, however the bus service looked very efficient and in operation despite it being a Sunday and Golden Week. Lovely to get away from the busier side of Japan. Highly recommend a trip here.

Okay, so you've seen the crowds of Tokyo and the endless temples of Kyoto, but you are still looking for that genuine rural Japanese experience. Time to head for Okayama to stay in a 100 year-old farmhouse. ||Hattoji is a place to unwind and reset yourself. You go there as much for what it DOESN'T have as what it does. There are no TVs, no traffic, no noise and no hassles. Time is dictated by the sun and you begin to really appreciate nature--we saw frogs and salamanders in the rice paddies right outside our door. There are lots of hikes in the mountains behind the house and the kids will enjoy riding the free bicycles. Light up the fire at night and enjoy the ancient art of talking to each other. ||Come here with family or a large group of friends. It would be a little bit sad to be here alone, particularly at night. Remember this is a tiny village in the mountains, so it is best to get there by car. Rent one in Himeji or Okayama and drive here in about one hour. The bus connections are very scant but you could also get a taxi from Yoshinaga, but I would recommend a rental car if you can. ||Whatever you do, make sure you bring your own food. This place is entirely self-catered and there are no supermarkets or convenience stores once you get up the mountain. There are a couple of places to eat, but there is no guarantee they will be open. If you are coming by car, stop for supplies at Kamigoori, where there is a sizeable supermarket. ||The house sleeps up to 14 people but there is also another house available around the corner if you want. The caretaker Maruo-san is a real sweetie, but she doesn't speak a lick of English and her Japanese has a thick Bizen accent. Just smile and nod. All the important information is written down for you anyway. ||If you are looking for a genuine traditional Japanese village, you'll love this place.

大好きな場所。

13名で貸切って宿泊。みんなでキッチンで料理をし、囲炉裏を囲んでお鍋を食べ、五右衛門風呂で温まり、お酒を飲んで忘年会をしました。星がキレイでした。次回は八塔寺山山頂までハイキングしたいなぁ。
