had the most amazing and local shopping experience here. It’s a small ceramic shop and i highly highly recommend it if you are otaru. The owner is super friendly and very knowledgeable in his craft.

Yoshi (owner) was kind and willing to share his experience with pottery. He spoke of the material, firing styles, glazes, and more. After shopping, he walked us over to his kilns, which are in the traditional oil- and wood-fired configurations. Interestingly, he studied in Kyoto, and fires much of his pottery at 1300 degrees Celsius. This helps to create an iridescent sheen on the pottery, which is very similar to the roof tiles introduced during the Asuka period (538-710).The studio overlooks the ocean and is adjacent to a wonderful patisserie. We were so grateful to meet this artist and purchase some of his work.
