I attended the 2 hr beginner maki-e experience back in March which I really enjoyed, and I had the opportunity to join full day lessons with Matsuda-sensei to learn the basic, intermediate and advanced techniques in July. He has the option to do short intensive private lessons (minimum 4 days) that may be more suitable for international students, or studio classes over multiple days that are shared with other students if you are able to spend more time in Tokyo.I have experience with working with urushi beforehand, so the class structure was very flexible to tailor to my specific requests. Since I was learning a few different techniques at the same time, the short course was planned to fit within the schedule I requested and was very informative. I find the private lesson structure to be very well suited to learning multiple techniques at the same time. The learning materials provided was very comprehensive and useful to reference again in my own time.I was able to learn a lot in this short period of time and recommend anyone who is interested in learning more about maki e to check out the beginner experience or more advanced classes if you have the chance, especially for English lessons based in Tokyo. I had the pleasure of meeting some of the other teachers and students at the studio, and everyone was very kind and welcoming!
蒔絵体験をさせていただきました。静かに集中しながら制作することができました。用意してくださっている絵柄ではなく、オリジナルの絵柄で手鏡を制作したのですが、先生方が丁寧に教えてくださり、こうしたいという要望にも応えてくださり、集中しながら楽しく制作することができました。忘れ物をしてしまい、急いで見つけて届けてくださったりと、ご迷惑をおかけしてしまいましたが、とてもご親切で、先生方も気さくで、心地良い空間でした。おかげでお気に入りの手鏡を作ることができて感謝しています。ありがとうございました！

周辺のオススメ
漆を扱うのも初めてで、蒔絵の体験をしました。手鏡やお皿など自分が好きなものから選べ、図案もお手本も素敵なものが沢山ありました。線で書くのか、塗りつぶすのか、蒔く金属の粉は何色にしようか、お手本を見ながら選ぶのも楽しかったです。同じ図案でも、技法によって、時代によって、こんなに変わるのかとか、この時代のが好き！など、様々な作品に囲まれて、一緒に体験をした子と発見をして喜んでいました。先生方の説明もわかりやすく、通われている生徒さんの作品を見れたのも嬉しかったです。丁寧に梱包して下さり、漆が固まるまで家に持ち帰って待つ時間も楽しいです。また行きたいです。ありがとうございました。
