Even though ikebukuro means “pond bag” the last part of this proper name sounds like owl, which is “fukuro”and honestly more remarkable than “bag” (which when said alone also is pronounced “fukuro”)… it is for this reason that owls have been used as a symbol of Ikebukuro in all forms, paintings, statues, mascots and well, temple benches.
