Sensoji (浅草寺), also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple, is Tokyo’s oldest and most popular Buddhist temple, founded in 645. Legend says two brothers found a statue of Kannon in the Sumida River, which kept returning to them—leading to the temple’s creation.Visitors enter through Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), Tokyo’s iconic symbol, then walk along Nakamise Street, a 200-meter path lined with shops selling souvenirs and local snacks. Beyond the Hozomon Gate are the main hall and five-story pagoda—modern reconstructions after wartime destruction.
Sensoji (浅草寺), also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple, is a Buddhist temple located in Asakusa. It is one of Tokyo's most colorful and popular temples. The legend says that in the year 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, out of the Sumida River, and even though they put the statue back into the river, it always returned to them. Consequently, Sensoji was built nearby for the goddess of Kannon. The temple was completed in 645, making it Tokyo's oldest temple.When approaching the temple, visitors first enter through the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), the outer gate of Sensoji Temple and the symbol of Asakusa and the entire city of Tokyo. A shopping street of over 200 meters, called Nakamise, leads from the outer gate to the temple's second gate, the Hozomon. Alongside typical Japanese souvenirs such as yukata and folding fans, various traditional local snacks from the Asakusa area are sold along the Nakamise. The shopping street has a history of several centuries. Beyond the Hozomon Gate stands the temple's main hall and a five storied pagoda. Destroyed in the war, the buildings are relatively recent reconstructions. The Asakusa Shrine, built in the year 1649 by Tokugawa Iemitsu, stands immediately adjacent to the temple's main building. Various events are held throughout the year in the Sensoji Temple area. The biggest of them is the Sanja Matsuri, the annual festival of the Asakusa Shrine, held in May.This temple and surrounding shops are always busy no matter the time of the week or day. Sensoji Temple is a few steps from Asakusa Station, served by the Ginza Subway Line, Asakusa Subway Line and Tobu Railway. Entrance to the temple area is free, except the inside of the temple where the statue of the Kannon is located.
This one is a must see. The oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo and photo opportunities around every corner. It's usually quite crowded so be mentally prepared for that. Don't be afraid to go off the beaten path to fine lesser frequented shops and restaurants. It's pretty special despite its popularity.
元禄年間(1688年～1704年)に紀伊国加太の淡島明神を勧請して建てられたお堂です。太平洋戦争の東京大空襲で本堂が焼失した際に浅草寺の仮本堂として御本尊をお守りしたことがある。淡島堂内には御本尊阿弥陀如来像・淡島明神像とその本地仏の虚空蔵菩薩像・取子地蔵尊などが安置されている。平成六年(1994年)に浅草寺境内整備の折に現在地に移築されました。
「台東区：旧石灯籠」2024年9月の写真です。本堂前に、５ｍもある大きな石灯籠でしたが風雨で劣化し、平成16年（2004）に除去されました。その一部がこれです。
浅草大平和塔浅草寺ホームページより昭和38年(1963)建立。浅草地区の3万人余の戦災殉難者の霊をまつる。台座の銘にはノーべル物理学賞の湯川秀樹博士の直筆「みたまよ、とこしえに、安らかに、われら守らん、世界の平和」。塔上部の「和」は浅草寺中興第24世貫首、清水谷恭順大僧正の筆。年中行事より3月10日 戦災殉難者追悼法会昭和20年(1945)3月10日未明の東京大空襲の被災者追悼の法会。建設趣意書より思い出づる調べも哀し昭和二十年三月九日の夜、Ｂ29三百機以上の大空襲により浅草一帯は火の海となる。••••浅草寺史略年表より1945年 昭和20年 3月10日未明の大空襲により炎上。本堂、仁王門、五重塔、輪蔵など烏有に帰す。11月18日.仮本堂落慶。1950年 昭和25年 4月22日、本堂再建勧進のため水戸出開帳が行なわれる(その後、昭和29年まで各地19回にわたる)。1958年 昭和33年 10月17日、新本堂落慶。45日間の記念開帳を営む。1960年 昭和35年 5月1日、雷門落慶。慶応元年の焼失以来95年ぶりの再建となる。1964年 昭和39年 4月1日、宝蔵門(旧仁王門)落慶。30日間の記念開帳を営む。1973年 昭和48年 11月2日、五重塔院落慶。1978年 昭和53年 本尊示現1350年につき、3月17日、18、19・10月15日〜11月15日の間、記念開帳を営む。1983年 昭和58年 3月28日、弁天堂落慶。1987年 昭和62年 33萬巻観音経写経満願。引き続き100萬巻写経運動を行なう(継続中)。1994年 平成6年 本堂西側の境内地整備工事完成する。10月20日、影向堂落慶。慈覚大師円仁さまご生誕1200年を慶し、10月31日〜11月6日まで御前立ご本尊のご開扉が行なわれる。2003年 平成15年 11月19日、駒形堂落慶。2008年 平成20年 本堂落慶50周年を迎え、30日間の記念開帳を営む。2010年 平成22年 12月6日、本堂大営繕円成。2011年 平成23年 9月21日、伝法院庭園が国名勝に指定される。以上参拝日∶2020年9月10日。
みたまよとこしえに安らかにわれら守らん世界の和湯川秀樹。
近年まで、明治二十五年(一八九二)に石工の酒井亀泉が奉納した燈籠が本堂前に安置されていましたが、これはその一部です。江戸時代後期、亀泉の祖父・栄三は酒癖が悪く、それがもとで失職してしまいます。 栄三の妻は信心していた浅草寺にお参りし、夫の酒癖の悪さの許しを願い、子孫代々酒を断つ旨を誓いました。この家訓を守り、やがて一家は石工として大成。亀泉がその報恩にと浅草寺にこの燈籠二基を奉納したそうです。平成十六年に、経年劣化などによる倒壊のおそれがある為、惜しまれながらも撤去され、ここにその一部を記念として納めました。
