The gentleman who I met here at his shop today is a truly exceptional person. Let me explain: I had walked all over town unsuccessfully to find a set of brake pads for my bicycle. None could be found. As a final resort I walked to this shop and was told by the owner, this gentleman, that he did not carry them, but suggested I try another shop, which he named. I said, through Google Translate, as all our conversations, that I had already been there and that shop was not open. He indicated that it ought to be open, and I asked what time? There was a bit of language confusion at this point, so he went to his phone and called the mentioned shop. A lot of chatting and chuckles over the phone, and finally he hung up and said, “I’m going there now. (Several times during our “conversation” he double checked that Ï was walking?”) He obviously realized that I had been covering lots of ground. So off we went to the shop in his car. A four mile trip. The shop did indeed have what I needed. I had the chance to share that I was on a bike trip in Japan, showed our planned route for the next day. I also mentioned by way of a photo were I was staying. Nothing would do but that he drive me the 3-4 miles up hill to my night’s stay, saving me another long walk.I wish that anyone who has doubts about the goodness of strangers could have been there. I was treated like a new friend by someone who I had only met a few tens of minutes before and whom I could only communicate with through Google Translate. This encounter will stay with me for a long, long time. Thank you kind gentleman from the cycle shop. You made my day.
