I don't get to have Saturdays off too often. But when I do, I pay a visit to this small bookshop in Nakamura-cho right beside the well-known local pawnshop Ichiroku. Miyazaki Tomoshibi Shobo ("Candle Light Book Shop") is run by Mr. and Mrs. Hidaka who are very knowledgeable about what there are available in Christian literature, theological, biblical studies available in Japanese. Especially, Mr. Hidaka keeps abreast of most recent critical biblical studies in Japan and is very savvy about the socio-political scenes today from his distinct point of view. He is very open to discussions and questions such as historical Jesus vs. Christ of faith - a type of questions that you don't get to ask in churches. This bookshop is practically my seminary which I get to go about once a month. Tomoshibi Shobo is the only Christian bookshop in Miyazaki Prefecture now. In this age of cyber-everything, it is nice to have such a brick-and-mortar bookshop with owners who are knowledgeable about various theological issues to discuss the content of the books they sell. There were times when there were bookstores in every corner of our town and when people read paper books. I do not deny the convenience of having e-books on your mobile devices. But once bookstores were part of our culture and we did all our learning there and not in schools - this is almost lost now. You see that the good old days are kept when you visit this tiny bookshop. And I commend Miyazaki Tomoshibi Shobo for anyone interested and concerned about seeming reality of things and not just so-called "spiritual" matters which is a very dubious term in our culture and need to re-learn. In our brave new world, this bookshop dares to continue the great tradition of discussions on the great texts which were superbly kept and have influenced our civilizations for the past two millennia. Battles were fought and nations rose and fell through differences in worldviews. Drop by, browse and learn something when you come to the pawnshop next door. Besides, don't you love the smell of ink in freshly printed books? "Can anything good come from Miyazaki?" Well, sometimes.
