This is a “must do” experience if you are in the area! It was not only a hands on experience but a history and cultural experience. The host was passionate about teaching this craft of paper making. They were wonderful host.
This workshop was such a memorable experience! We learned so much about the traditional art of making washi and got to make our own sheets by hand. The master and her apprentice were not only highly skilled but also so kind and welcoming. I’d recommend this to anyone interested in Japanese crafts or looking for a unique cultural experience.
美しい日本に出会う旅拝見しました。4代目から息子さんへと。5代目に繋がり高知の伝統を守られている姿伝統の良さを改めて発見させてくれた気がします。続けて頂ける事に感謝します。
We spontaneously stopped at Midori's place to see if we could do her workshop, she had limited time available (less than an hour) and kindly gave us a quick demonstration of the entire process, allowing us to try the steps by ourselves. The amazing thing is she refused to receive any money for that, which was so generous of her. Thank you so much Midori and we are hoping to visit you again for the full workshop!
I attended a one-day workshop with Inoue-san and truly enjoyed the entire experience. Since I am not a complete beginner, Inoue-san allowed me to use her professional, original washi tools, which made the experience even more special. We created many washi papers together, which I brought home and will use for my Chigirie artworks, serving as cherished memories of Tosa. I loved hearing the detailed explanations from Inoue-san, who was enthusiastic about sharing as much information as possible. I definitely plan to return and further my knowledge of washi paper-making techniques. Highly recommended for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels.
An excellent experience! I highly recommend Inoue-san’s workshops to any who are interested in learning about washi and the process of creating it by hand.I took a two-day workshop with Inoue-san in order to learn the process of making washi from kozo plant matter. I was able to learn about every step in great detail, from preparing and cleaning the kozo bark, removing the impurities, making neri from tororoaoi roots, beating the kozo fiber by hand, preparing the fiber vat, nagashisuki and tamesuki papermaking, drying and pressing, all the way to a finished product (I chose to make a hanging scroll, which we took to be inscribed upon by a local priest).Inoue-san is very professional, knowledgable, patient and kind. I expressed interest in learning about making paper threads and she offered to introduce me to a friend of hers who does this particular craft for a short lesson in addition to the originally planned workshop. I feel lucky to have had such an incredibly attentive and personal experience that helped me understand more about Tosa and the tradition of papermaking in Kōchi.I speak some Japanese which was very helpful, but Inoue-san had many instructions printed out in English and did her best to help translate things I didn’t understand using translation apps. The snacks we had at her home were special to the region, and the places where we ate for lunch were affordable and really delicious! I will be returning in the future to learn more from Inoue-san.Thank you!

We spent an absolutely wonderful day with Midori and "John". They were incredibly knowledgeable, warm and inviting. It was a real course on how to make various types of Washi paper start to finish with enough information that we can go home and repeat the process from scratch. Midori is a 4th generation papermaker using traditional and more modern methods in a 90 year old paper workshop. If you want a quality course with wonderful instructors, I don't think you could beat Tosa Washi Inoue Paper Workshop. They even included lunch at a local restaurant.
