We had the most wonderful experience at Meihodo. We stayed one night and did the samurai experience in the morning before leaving. My partner also did the waterfall experience. It was incredibly authentic, the staff are so well versed in martial arts and all things samurai Japanese culture. One of the best things we’ve done in Japan! I’d come again in a heartbeat. Also incredibly tranquil place to stay and the room was stunning - thanks so much!
We're privileged to be well travelled, but all we can say is WOW!If you're looking for a genuinely authentic Japanese cultural experience then just give these guys a chance. We had an amazing (and quite surreal) experience by staying in their beautiful site for 5 days.We also opted for breakfast (with one of us vegitarian) for 5 days, and an unforgettable meal one evening, what an experience. Also book the Samurai experience with their incredibly well trained team, you will not regret this. It's probably one of the best experiences we've had.A BIG shout out to all the team, especially Momokko (apologies if spelt wrong) and Matt. All of the team love what they do, it's just wonderfully authentic. The grounds and gardens are some of the best we've seen in Japan.Thank you Meihodo, you're welcome to come over to rural England anytime. 🥰🇯🇵
Absolutely amazing! Being here feels like you’re dreaming. The pictures do not do it justice. The people, food, amenities, house and location is all 1000/10. It gives you the chance to interact with people who live and work in the area, which made our trip infinitely better than it would have been otherwise; and everyone you meet is the kindest person. They have options for additional cultural experiences - it was worth it!!! I remember reading another review saying that they learned more in a couple days here than the entire Japan trip and I agree.Additionally: We travelled with our one year old and they made an effort to include her in everything, down to having a foam sword when we learned kendo. She had the best time and we appreciate their kindness towards her very much 🤍The only downside was that it ruined the rest of our trip because everything else paled in comparison.

My son and I recently stayed at Meihodo, and it was one of the most meaningful and memorable experiences of our entire trip to Japan. The property itself is beautiful, peaceful, and thoughtfully designed. Surrounded by nature near Mt. Aso, it feels like a place intentionally created for reflection, learning, and connection. The accommodations were exceptional, the grounds were serene, and every meal we enjoyed was outstanding. What truly sets Meihodo apart, however, is the quality of its cultural experiences and the people who bring them to life.A special thank you to Mato and Ryo, who made our stay unforgettable.During our visit, we participated in Kyudo (Japanese archery), Taiko drumming, and the waterfall meditation experience. Each activity was excellent, but what impressed me most was the quality of the instruction. As someone who spent over two decades in the military and has taught and mentored people throughout my career, I immediately recognized how effective Mato’s teaching style was. Every lesson followed a natural progression: first explaining the concepts and purpose, then demonstrating the technique, guiding us through the process, and finally allowing us to practice and develop confidence through repetition. Complex traditions became approachable without ever losing their authenticity or depth.Mato is an exceptional instructor—knowledgeable, patient, personable, and deeply passionate about preserving and sharing Japanese culture. He has a rare ability to make beginners feel comfortable while still conveying the discipline, respect, and philosophy behind each practice. The Kyudo experience was especially memorable. It was far more than simply learning to shoot a bow. It was a lesson in focus, mindfulness, discipline, and intention. The Taiko drumming was energetic, engaging, and incredibly fun, while the waterfall meditation provided one of the most peaceful and reflective moments of our entire journey.Ryo was equally welcoming and attentive throughout our stay, helping create an atmosphere that felt warm, genuine, and personal from beginning to end. What makes Meihodo special is that it is not simply a place to stay or a collection of activities. It is a place where Japanese tradition, nature, hospitality, and personal growth come together in a way that feels authentic and deeply meaningful.Of all the experiences we have enjoyed throughout Japan, Meihodo may very well have been the highlight of our trip. It gave my son and me an opportunity not only to learn about Japanese culture, but to experience it together in a way we will remember for the rest of our lives.Thank you, Mato, Ryo, and the entire Meihodo team for an unforgettable experience. We leave with incredible memories, a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture, and a sincere hope to return again someday.
